“Is a super mobile tech review and we ve reviewed a lot of moto phones phones lately so here s something else as different as alcatel now they make affordable and last year s idol. 3. That we reviewed. We really liked it a lot of good phone for a very reasonable price they re going a little more upscale here.
This is the alcatel idol 4s not just for because that s a different phone. This is the 4s. The four will be on cricut for less money 199 low. Respects this one is the highest end phone.
They ve made yet and you know what it s it s pretty darn nice looking slim light. But still quality glass front and back and the specs on this are pretty good. Too a qhd high resolution amoled display 16 megapixel camera on the back nfc wi fi ac lte this is unlocked gsm so no contract this is nelson your carrier is going to offer works on t mobile and at t and their sub carriers in the united states sounds pretty promising doesn t it and look else what else you get in the box yes it looks a lot like the samsung gear vr doesn t it but this is the alcatel idol 4. Svr goggle also included so this here in a nice little box.
In fact this functions as the shipping box for this inside shipping box. And just mounted in here is 399. So in some ways. That s not so bad.
But then again it depends on how much you like vr and how good the experience is we re going to find out about that now i know i m probably going to say this a million times. But this is a really pretty phone. But let s talk about the elephant in the room. Well there s two elephants actually one s a lot bigger than the other one it also looks so much like the galaxy s6 except for it s more of a black where the galaxy was more you know complex it could be blue.
It could be black. But obviously a lot of similarity going on here in the design. But hey at least i picked something pretty to copy the other smaller elephant is what they called the boom. Key ok so boom you hit the key and something happens the idea this looks so much like the xperia button the camera button on the side so you know there it is but once we get around that fact look how thin this is 7 millimeters.
It which is as thick as the moto z force. We just reviewed its back cover you know just naked so that s pretty darn slim actually we got our volume rockers over here i like this chamfered metal and this is this is pretty much the refinement of alka tells previous design that they had with the idol. 3. It s nice that the curves the way they re sandwich the darker color here in between got our antenna lines not too.
Unsolved it s it s nice it weighs 149. Grams or 525. Ounces. So it s also pretty light.
But doesn t feel like cheap light. If you know what i mean. It s a handful. I mean as you can see me.
Holding it here and i have pretty big hands as a 55 inch. Display it s not a small footprint. Phone but these days 55. Inches is kind of the average size for android phone.
So no complaints there these speakers will play them in a little bit here and here my. Goodness they are. Loud. 36.
Watts of audio coming at you gee jbl. Certified speakers. Whatever that means and they also port out the backside. So you ve got just plenty of good sound.
Now if you max out the volume. It will distort. But if you max out the volume. It s just loud as some laptops you know.
It s pretty loud on the back here. We have a fingerprint scanner now they went for pretty instead of practical in my opinion because hey there s barely any ridge there s barely any tactile feel there and if you play guitar like i do and you have a little calluses on your fingertips. You re going to really not feel it there. But that aside it s a pretty standard spot for a rear mounted scanner.

And it works just fine. It integrates fine with android six marshmallows security software. The 16 megapixel camera back here. Now is the interesting thing alcatel and the specs they provide us that it could be a sony.
Our toshiba sensor well sony makes the better sensor. So let s hope you get a sony sensor and not a toshiba. Sorry toshiba. I will talk about the camera quality a little bit later but you can see we have the the led two tone flash going on over here your sim card slot is under the door.
The usual simple key tool provided so you can poke this out. And actually can take two sim cards. A popular feature overseas less so here. So well you can have two different lines and your phone at once or you can have one nano sim and a micro sd card up to 200 gigs and capacity.
You can t have two sim cards sd card. The second spot actually does dual duty for. Either a sim or the microsd card. Standard micro usb.

And look. A headphone jack motorola s and influencing everybody too much we still get a dedicated headphone jack and like i said you get some ok quality jbl earbuds fit and finish is great on that s the 2d glass. A little bit of curve over here it looks just really good. It feels nice.
And this offer looks pretty nice. Too now alcatel used to kind of i think overdo. It just a little bit with the software now we re looking at almost stock android here so that s always a good thing your app drawer looks pretty much like your standard android app drawer your settings are typical settings for android so it s very clean and it helps keep the phone running fast. Cpu here is pretty good.
Really it s the 18. Gigahertz. Snapdragon 650 to those who follow these things know that the 600 series is the mid range and this is a later generation in there. And it s at the higher end just of the performance on this and i ll show you the benchmarks in a minute and the scores.
It s actually pretty good and really for a lot of people. This is going to be a responsive fast well behaved phone. It s good enough to play games on that sort of thing so no complaints. But it s going to hurt it in the marketing and specs wars.
Because a lot of people who buy unlocked phones are enthusiasts and enthusiasts buy phones like the oneplus. 3. It s going to get mentioned again again. Because it s also 399 similar size and that one is in snapdragon 820.
Which is the top of the line. Which is also what you ll find in more expensive phones like the galaxy s7 family in the htc. 10. And so on so yeah.
It did have a very adequate processor. But it s going to hurt it in terms of pricing. Probably and marketing. Three gigs of ram.
Which sitting and right in between two gigs. Which is standard for lower end phones and older phones and the four gigs that we see in the top dog phones of course some even have more but for gigs would be plenty three gigs as ample. I think for most folks unless you re mad multitask. Who really tries to keep ten apps.
Going and flowing at once so i kind of have a love hate relationship with vr. It s really cool it can be very immersive at the same time i hate being very disconnected from my environment right now i feel like i m disconnected from you of course you re not even really here are you. But i always feel like you are somewhere behind that camera lens there so that said. There is really impressive vr.

The most impressive is still going to be something that you do with your pc. Whether it is the oculus or if it s going to be the htc vive then there s the samsung gear vr which is the best mobile version. I ve seen and then we kind of tumble down all the way to google cardboard. Which literally is a cardboard viewer so looking at it from that perspective.
This is an improvement because hey at least. It s nice sturdy plastic. It s not going to melt in the rain right and the design is super super derivative of the gear vr. But it s a little bit more bulky and you take off the front cover and you mount the phone in here screen facing in which is the typical way these things work clips work pretty well to hold it in the idea.
What this is probably really just to protect the phone and to block out any ambient light. It has little cutouts so you can run the headphone cable from the phone. If you wish to do so. Jbl earbuds are included in the box not really stupendous ones.
But you know here the thing is with the gear vr. There s actually a usb connector. So they can do pretty neat. More sophisticated things with it like they have a four way d pad.
Controller over here and stuff like that not possible here. This pretty much is as dumb as cardboard is only it s plastic with nice you know avoid your forehead rash problem here padding. It does have two magnetic buttons while they re touch sensitive from our perspective. When you use it facing down here.
They re overly sensitive. It s easy to accidentally touch them one does select one does back so it s easy to suddenly back out of your game or your movie that s too bad right and this via magnetic signal. It sends information to the phone so that s how that works it s kind of primitive. It s not the best thing in the world quality.
You know part of it might be that this is a mid range upper mid range granted phone. So you need a lot of horsepower both graphics and cpu to do vr well to get high resolution and all that sort of thing. So little star is the content provider for for alcatel and little star is a little company and not much content but you can put google cardboard apps on there and content and you can use the google camera app cardboard app rather so you can actually kind of take your own is need 3d photos and videos. But the content so far the videos even the games looks pixelated looks a little resolution it looks a little up close.
There s no focusing wheel. Here. It does stay in focus maybe in part that s because the focus point is so close it looks pretty crappy. Honestly.
It s just not all that so as a selling point for the alcatel ii not so much personally i would just get the cardboard or the the 40 viewmaster that s coming out for those of you who remember the viewmaster stereoscopic sliders for kids well they re going to make one kind of like this too you do get a strap in the box. So you can strap it onto your head. You don t have to hold it like this when it comes with this cover here that you for the backside. That you re probably never going to use again.
Honestly because look how huge that is it s very bulky. But you could do this and protect it and have it looks like an old photo printer doesn t one of those little photo printers or something. Like that anyway. Yeah.
All right so let s test out these speakers. Since alcatel does a very good job with audio and it s a one of their big selling points. So we re going to play one of our videos. So you can hear it wow laptop like nice pretty full pretty rich.
This is lisa from mobile. Tech review and the moto g is back as ever it that s about as loud as my voice actually is in this room a pretty impressive pretty impressive stuff right here some. If the built in audio is important to you you don t want to carry around headphones. And you don t want to use external speaker.
As well this would be a good choice. So how about the camera boy. Our little toy is living large right. There.
Let s take a picture that quick pretty quick. There the focus speed on this is reasonably good i found i didn t quite get every shot with it but it s again for the price. It s not too bad color saturation and contrast on this are quite good you got a manual mode here so you can control your iso you whitebalance that sort of thing panorama mode slow motion video and plug into a third party player called fuse if you want which i didn t really float my boat. But you might feel differently about that and that s for sort of doing 3d pictures.

If you want to go all the way around something and do that sort of idea. What that s what you can do with it shoots 4k video at 30 frames per second. There is only digital image stabilization here. There s no optical image stabilization.
Which is fair for the price. And there s our little friend and i just took a picture up pretty pretty good pretty nice colors of course. The lighting is good in here details nice on that reflections on the nose are not blown out outdoor shot. Water can be challenging looks pretty good.
And that is actually not bad a lot of the camera phones that we ve taken pictures with even the moto g. 4. Has tended to overexpose the highlights on the flower. There is it s nice it s really it s okay they re a little if he exposures.
So i took a couple different ones so low light. Not really the best. It was using the flash. There it certainly did white out the kitties fur a whole.
Heck of a lot and the the the fur is a little bit painted on looking. But you know for the price. I think most people are gonna be pretty happy with it this is a 3000 milliamp battery. That is sealed inside these skinny glass phones well they re never open abble.
It also comes with a quick charger. It s qualcomm quick charge. Con technology inside so it does charge. Very rapidly.
3000 milliamps is pretty par for the course these days for a mid upper mid to high end phones. And thanks to the snapdragon 600. Rather than 800 series battery life has helped a little bit. But we do have a big q.
Hd. Amoled display in here to power up a whole lot of wireless radios and so you know. It s pretty much an all day phone about as much as say the htc 10 is one could argue about the samsung galaxy s7 edge and that one does have a little bit bigger battery life but it s in the range of yes you can run from 8 to 11. As long as you re not doing something like using the gps.
A whole lot i mean you pokemon go people that sort of thing. If you re streaming video for hours upon hours. Even then it runs pretty efficiently you ll get many hours out of it. But if you re playing games.
Particularly 3d games run times will be shorter. But on average about a day on a charge. The phone gets a little warm and charging on the bag. It gets hot on the back.
When it s in the vr. Goggles and you know that s the the peril of a thin glass phone the samsung galaxy s7 does the same thing when it s in the gear vr nothing i worry about but just something to note. There call quality on the phone has been good for incoming outgoing voice data speeds are par for the course on the carrier networking question and we tested this with at t and t mobile. Both so good.
There now let s talk about the competition. A little bit. Because the the mid range phone has become a thing ever since last year. So we just reviewed the moto g.
4. That s 199 there s the moto g. 4. Plus.
For 50 more to 49 both considerably less expensive. But those you only get 1080p display. So if you really like that sharp amoled display this willing to keep in mind. Also the g4 is do benchmark a lot slower.

But another option besides those of course is the one plus three for those of you who are really power users. And you re cool with the 1080p display. Which is amoled on the oneplus. 3.
You do get a faster cpu. There. And i suppose street cred. Among your phone.
Loving friends who know what one plus three is about and then there s carrier phones last year s model they often sell them at a discount. I think a lot of folks who really aren t even that aware of unlocked phones or alcatel probably are just if they want to save some money and get a pretty nice phone. They probably are going to go is like last year s galaxy model or if they re into ios. They might even consider last year s iphone or an iphone se that sort of thing and this is a difficult position to be in price wise.
Too. Because you know there s a market for low end phones people really want an inexpensive and there s a market for the high end phones especially people are like oh. It s cool i can afford whatever the monthly payment is on but this kind of in between segments. I m not sure we re going to find out just how strong or not strong.
It is so that s the alcatel. Aisle 4s is really a lovely. Phone 55. Inch.
Qhd amoled display pretty good performance. This is not a snapdragon 820 top of the line. But honestly today s upper mid range cpus are plenty fast and they re going to be as your smartphone from last year or two years ago. It plays games just fine you can do your pokemon go on and all that sort of thing.
16. Megapixel camera on the back. It s okay. It s not bad.
I think really it might be an image more image processing issue more anything else. That holds it back from really kind of hitting the flagships hard. It s decent 8 megapixel camera up front. And it has a kind of slightly creepy beautification feature that you can disable if you look too much like you from the wax museum favorite scanner on the back it works well like i said.
I wish is a little more tactile. They went for kind of aesthetic beauty and blending it in more than anything else. The speaker is on the on the front and on the back bi directional. Very good so there s a lot to like here.
But the challenges alcatel is still not exactly a household name um. Not a lot of people buy unlocked phones with no carrier involvement whatsoever. So selling this for 400 bucks might be a tough sell. Because enthusiasts are going to go more towards the one plus three and people who really want to save money and get a brand.
They ve heard of are probably going to get a moto g. For a moto g. For plus. If this was 300 and they didn t even bundle the vr.
Headset i think that would be a better sell on slew 299. I d be yeah go for it. But as it is with the mediocre vr experience. It s hard to say go buy this just for the br vr experience.
