“Folks. This is steve a b for yale. This is going to be a short short episode. It s a techno sandbox exercise.
It s sunday morning and i got mail delivery. Somehow amazon can tell the post office to come out on sunday to make a delivery. I m laughing of any rate. I checked my mailbox because i was expecting a delivery and there it was these two items in an envelope in my mailbox.
They didn t need to come into the yard. They just put it in the mailbox across the street that s rule free delivery that s what they call it in the old days. What is this because of the number of videos. I ve made over the years and continue to make and the size of the video files accumulating.
I deal in not gigabytes. But overall in many terabytes of data in preserving all of my work. I normally use these this brand. I m not recommending it it s not a promotion.
But i ve been using it for two years and it s fantastic. This is the spindle of 25 50 gigabyte 50 gigabyte double layer double layer blu rays each one can theoretically hold 50 gigabytes of files in reality the limit of actual files is about 46. Gigabytes and the rest is used for layout and file lookup table. Okay.
I just ordered these because i was getting low on these cake box of them that i have and i m in the process of doing a lot of backups and i noticed that i i can t remember the last time i actually checked. But i checked to see what the price of the during gigabyte you got me right 100 gigabyte like this. But i have no penis yet now these are double layer so since they re 50. Gigabytes that means that in blu ray.
Each layer is approximately 25 gigabytes of data. There i don t know if there s a 75 gigabyte size disc. But there is a hundred it s 4 layer. That s what excel.
Means now. The amazon product page warns. You prominently be sure your blu. Ray burner is capable of excel mode.
In other words. It s possible to have i guess to have a blu ray burner that can only do one layer..
And then and the one that i own actually i own four of them are all capable of doing excel. But in the past. I haven t gotten a hundred to try out because it s not economical. This is 25 50s.
They cost me 55. So can you figure that out this is like 12 of these for 50 right how much is 12 into 54. A piece this cost me 10. I bought it for the experience of trying to burn 100 gigabytes.
So this is the intro. The second part of this is going to be very short. I haven t done it yet if either is going to be success or failure. I m either going to announce to you that i succeeded in burning whatever it ll be probably like ninety four ninety five gigabytes.
I don t i ll have to find out how much will actually go on there is you have to have space for the layout. Tables and stuff like that now. There s an awful lot of sectors. So the tables are very large they take up four gigabytes on a 50 gigabyte er.
So i m assuming that i won t get more than between ninety and ninety three gigabytes on this one we shall see. But it could just fail and blow my ten dollars right there or it could just refuse to burn. It the burners and the software have become smarter and unlike the old days in the old days in the beginning. The burners would attempt something that they actually couldn t do and then they would get in there having already start to lay down some tracks.
Which ruins it. If you don t complete it. And then they would say. Oh oh.
I can t do this. And you you created. What was called a coaster you know you put your drink on a coaster to keep the sweaty condensation and the summer humidity from ruining your furniture. People are granted many burned many coasters okay enough of laughing at what i m about to try to do so.
Let s pause started to burn five minutes ago. I m burning the contents of these two. I m hand holding which come to ninety two point four gigabytes ninety two point four gigabytes. I have burned the contents each to a fifty previously so i know they re good and now this is image burn.
I am gb you are n. You can find that by googling and it took it a bit of time to go through the phase called reserving tracks..
I was worried. But then it started filling the buffer and then this is writing sectors and we ve got five percent done at this point. And it s estimating it ll take now that we ve passed six minutes its estimating. It s going to take almost in another hour and one half.
And it is burning at four x. The full rating of that four layer blu ray so we ll come back near the end pause again let s take a quick glimpse at our progress for burning. A hundred gigabyte blu ray four layer lank. We ve just passed 45 minutes of burn time.
We estimate another just over a half hour to go 64 complete burning a forex rate. That means. It s gone past 50 gigabytes. So it s put on more than one of the my regular 50 gigabyte blu rays and we re in the second half of the race to the finish line.
And it hasn t failed yet hoorah. I am happy we ll check in toward the end. Let s pause well i was busy rendering another video and i missed the actual completion. But there it is image burnin.
Claire declares. Operation. Successfully completed now image burn. Gives the option of having a verified when it finishes burning can go back and check.
But i prefer to do it differently. What i m going to do now is take and let me just double click here now that doesn t look like very much does it. But if we do properties. It says there are 92 point 4 gigabytes right here and no free space so we really bumped our head.
What s next i m going to take this four layered blu ray now that it s burned with data and and closed. I m going to move it to another computer and i m going to let it copy back from the blu ray onto the hard drive of a different computer. We re going to pause and when that completes. I ll explain why i use that procedure.
So let s pause again let s continue. I m on a different computer. And now i m using obs open broadcaster software to record the desktop. What are we seeing here in this left panel on drive al.
I ve created a folder called copy back on the right. Panel..
On drive d. Drive. D. Is.
The bd. Re drive that. Means. That it s a blu ray drive optical drive.
And you can see that there are the two folders and here here are the two folders and they re highlighted because i had right clicked and sent copy and clicked on copy back and paste it so now it s in the projects in progress to copy from the blu. Ray that i just burned to a hard drive on the computer different than the one i used to burn the data on to the blu. Ray why the key thing is i m using a different blue ray driver. I m using a different blu ray drive now several of my computers have blu.
Ray drives that can burn blu ray discs and can read them. So. I m able to make a blu ray disc on one machine. And then check.
It by using a different blu ray drive to read it back on a different computer. Now. I ve repeated myself three times and there s a reason if you get into working extensively with optical discs. You know that sometimes because of minor variations in the manufacturing process.
Whether it be a cd a dvd or a blu ray occasionally you can write data on to an optical disk and then when you try to read it back with that very same drive or a different one there may be a spot or two. Where it doesn t seem to be able to get back and get the data. But if you go to yet another drive that one seems to have no problem and reads all the way through the data. Because not only is there variation in the manufacturer of the medium.
Blu ray dvd or cd or flash drives. There. s also variation in the ability of the individual drive. Via a cd drive.
A dvd drive or a blu ray drive. They don t all even. Though. They re the same model made in the same factory and all that stuff sometimes when they hit a spot that s a little iffy.
Some can read it in some cat. I don t want to back up valuable data to discover later that i can t read the disc..
So the way i protect myself is i burn it with one drive on one computer. And i copy it back on a different computer with a different drive and i take that as a reasonable test now have i had occasion where what i did that i couldn t read back the blu ray on that second drive. Answers. Yes.
So what did i do throw it away. Not yet. Then i go to my third machine. With another.
I have a total of four blu ray reader drive reader writers. I go to a third machine. And i tried to copy back again if it fails on that one i make a new data backup. I throw that disk away if it can read through it then i go back to the original drive not the one that failed.
I go back to the original drive and i try reading it back with that and if it passes. I know i m safe. I ve got two out of three that can read it and then i ll go to the fourth one and try that and see where i m going it all depends on how valuable the data is well we re back running. According to this we ve got just now one gigabyte left to copy from the excel blu ray to the hard drive had 149 mega.
But about fourteen point nine megabytes per second to give you a sense of perspective just recently. I uploaded a video about some micro sd cards that i bought and you could write to them at approximately the speed and read from them at like 60 megabytes per second. Now. You can understand that a blu ray.
This rate is probably fast enough for example. I m gonna guess to play a movie. But when you re dealing with let s say it again ninety two point four gigabytes of data on a single piece of medium. This is a decent rate and unless it fails like in the next 60 seconds.
Because it says we get about one minute to go. This is going to be a success. 332 45 seconds to go counting down at this point. If it was a launch to the moon.
The the engines would be fired. But the gantry would still be holding on to the rocket with the astronauts and the capsule on top and when the tailpipe temperatures of the rocket engines came up to full temperature not just full thrust than the gantry would let go and the rocket would attempt to lumber off against the pull of gravity. And it s done and there was no error indicated so this is steve a before who s been playing all afternoon in his ” ..
