We found that teenagers often have ipads and ipods. Without a data plan without cellular connection and often are in the situation. Where they can t connect to wi fi and so what jot does is it utilizes the wi fi radios. The bluetooth radios on the phones to talk phone to phone without any server in the middle.
Without ever hitting the internet. And by connecting these devices..
So we create what s called a mesh network. So the feature is called air chat and at daisy chains ipods ipads iphones any device that has a bluetooth or wi fi radio together so that messages can reach the nearest 100 feet and up to a thousand or 2000. Feet depending on how many people are in between well we certainly encompasses a school. I can understand why this is taken off like wildfire.
But what about the fact that you re almost your entire customer base is students are your concern. There s going to be a backlash against basically encouraging kids to text at school. You know we re thrilled that its students in fact. My co founder jason ahlstrom.
And i both have middle schoolers. Who are starting middle school this year. And we built the app specifically for them. We wanted our teens to have a safe way to find their friends to connect with their friends through a mobile device.
Without necessarily having to share their phone numbers. And we saw this need that about a third of us teens weren t able to text while on school campus..
What we find is that there s a huge amount of usage in the morning just before school a big spike in usage at lunchtime and another huge spike right after school is over so most of the texting that s going on really happens at appropriate times schools do a great job of making sure that students don t have their devices out during learning times. But jot meets meets that social and messaging communication need outside of those times. That s right we used to scribble notes. It doesn t change the way you communicate changes they re still going to try to and that s not the distraction.
They re going to have to deal with are there other are you hoping that they re there. Other case studies or other customer groups will that this will also work for what are your goals in terms of diversifying use. Yeah. Absolutely.
I m jot doesn t work just as a mesh network or offline. Texting app. It works like any other over the top messaging app. When you do have a connection and so we see a lot of growth among the older demographic.
We re also seeing a lot of growth internationally i what we ve seen internationally is that mobile devices are smart devices with both wi fi and bluetooth radios are coming down. And cost they re getting very very cheap..
But the cost for data plans and the cost for internet. Connectivity is pretty much staying the same. And so john s meeting. A need internationally by connecting people who live in densely populated areas who can t afford to to tax in to message who can t afford an internet connection.
These people are able to get on jot and leverage. It s mesh network capability to to message each other very very interesting and you re right the data plan is expensive. We all have sticker shock when we open that bill every month. A fascinating stuff.
