Ladies and gentle players or should. I say would be players. Because today.
Our focus focus is taking direct aim at how to play go online. Many of you already how to play on the servers that i’m taking a look at today. But i have been notified by a couple of beginners recently.
But they weren’t entirely certain where to go to play what server to pick how to log on to them register all these good things so if that sounds like something that you’ve been trying to russell with yourself let’s go ahead. Answer all of those questions today. Because it can be difficult trying to figure out where to play go online.
But before that you know what’s not difficult finding out where to play go offline. That’s right if you are one person who wants to play irl wouldn’t you know over at. But duke club.
There is a lovely little map here you can click on its got like over like what almost yeah. Almost two hundred meetups currently listed on the map all around the world. If you want to play go.
In person you want to get a sense for if there are go players around you. But duke club sorry. But duck duck club is a great site to go to so you begin getting the idea of who’s around you where the clubs are how do you get there all that good stuff.
And if you are in the middle of nowhere. Let’s say you are in the middle of greenland. And there is no go club around you you could always of course.
Add your own meetup to the map. And maybe other people are around you are looking at the map as well they’ll know you’re there. You’ll have people to play with so win win so if you want people if you want to play with people irl.
No reason not to check out baduk dot club deers have a favor check out the website as always thank you too. But a club for import sponsoring this video alright so the first server. We are going to talk about is the one that is in my opinion one of the most beginner friendly servers on mine.
To do that you can just go ahead. And just type online go server. It should be the first result or you can just go to online go calm good old ogs when you hit the page.
This is what you are going to be traded to or you’ll be traded to this. But really who wants to look at a not dark version of the website. I don’t know only crazy people that right there is one of the benefits immediately apparent in choosing ogs as your server of choice it does come with his handy dandy option of white or dark theme dark theme for those of you who may be using laptops mobile devices of any sort you’re gonna use less power.
Obviously having a black background than a rather bright white background. So that’s good other inherent positive right off the bat is the fact that it is actually a website. You can see some of the matches going on right now directly in front of you it is all web based you can go and access.
It therefore from any device that can bring up a webpage that’s really really great signing up is fairly easy as you can see above my head. There is a sign up button and bring up a brand new account for you is very very easy all you need is a click on register here as you can see all i need is a username and a password email is optional for a maximum privacy if you don’t want to hand over your email. You don’t have to it’s absolutely fine.
Only problem with that i imagine is if you forget your password and you haven’t given an email well good luck to you once you’re signed in finding a game is extraordinarily simple. Yet again. All you have to do is go up here to a play tab.
And then you have your choice you can pick correspondence games. Correspondence games. Is when you’ve got days to play a game.
Maybe you don’t have time to sit down devote an hour immediately to playing a game. You can go and set up with one with over. I don’t know four days three days.
Sometimes even weeks per move or whatever and you can just log on and play in your own time with someone else who’s logging on and playing in their own time. As welfare notes those games can take quite some time probably even if the gate. If it’s slow enough it could easily just like take all friggin year otherwise creating a custom game is is easy as clicking custom game create you can specify your time period.
You can specify your mean time your bo. Yomi your challenge will appear up here for anyone to accept you can even specify minimum and a maximum ranking that you are interested in playing against one other cute little addition to playing on ogs. It affords you the chance to have all of your games.
Obviously saved and nicely seen right here in your game history. But more than that you can always go into any of your past games with a click of a button and then if you wanted to send that game to maybe one of your friends maybe to someone else to have reviewed. It’s a simple matter of just going copy and paste the link to your friend or whoever they’ll have your game right there they can look at it in their own browser.
They can review it in their own browser. That is amazing in terms of convenience and all the servers that we are going to look at today. I will say that right there cannot be beaten in terms of sheer convenience alone it stands as number one.
If that is your main concern one of the downsides of playing on this server will stand out quite immediately you can see there are a lot of queues currently playing and i will zoom in to make it a little bit easier to see that there are a lot of queues playing on the server. There are not a lot of don players currently playing at any given time. If you are a don player.
It’s going to be tough let’s just say. It’s going to be tough for you to get a game with the relative ease that you’re going to see on some of the other servers. So if you are a done player.
And that is a concern for you do bear that in mind all right server. Number two we are going to talk about is cage yes. It’s been around for a very long time to get to it you could just quite literally.
Google. Go cage yes. And or type.
In go. Kgs comm. You will find the web page pretty easily right off the bat.
It looks decisively. Older. Than the old.
Oh jess counterpart that we just mentioned and although. It does currently have a web page here you will notice that the official client. Where it’s telling you to play go now is going to absolutely have you install its own client.
File. Now that is of course available for windows. And mac.
Once that is installed and loaded up you will have a nice happy little main menu window over here to play on cage. Yes. You can simply click play on cage.
Yes. Yes. This interface is roughly from the early 2000s way over ten years old at this point.
But logging in is fairly painless. If you are going to choose this server to play on my personal recommendation aside from the rooms. Which is going to get slightly confusing.
I do recommend any new players to join the cage yes teaching ladder. If you are going to play on the server you can find it under the room list lessons kg s teaching ladder. I would recommend that you join that one as well as the beginners room also found under lessons.
There are a few different ways to get a game. One of the easiest is to monitor to the open games tab want to make sure that the open games tab is under rooms open games have it make sure you have that checked that way you can see who is looking for a game. You can see that there are a a small variety of cues looking for a game.
There’s even a couple of don level players looking at for a game. Do beware. If you do not want to play against a bot.
You pay a special attention that you don’t play any of the multitude of robots that can be found on caged yes at any particular time of day aside from that this is a relatively beginner friendly server. Even if there is not a human player at your level. Let’s say in the 20 q.
Range. There’s a good chance that at the very least you might be able to get a game with a bot. If you’re just looking for some extra practice or just a quick game.
If you do want to try your hand at playing a human on the other hand you can always go to custom game preferably in english game room make sure you are on the open list and from there. You can choose your rule. Set you can choose your time settings.
Unlike oh just from this screen you cannot restrict rank as you see i have no options here to do so from there you have to go into auto match preferences and from the automat preferences screen. Only there can you estimate your rank and choose a maximum rank difference. Free or ranked and your various settings so bear that in mind as a fine server for beginners.
I will say it’s a little bit more of a difficult server for mid don’s and above. Because as you can see here. There is currently only one 5 don game up sorry.
No pathar. There are 2 5. Don games going on right now.
But one of those games. Is even a handicap game. And not an even game so much like ogs.
We’ve got a little bit higher bade on population. But not a very very large one as we’re going to see in some of the other servers that we’re going to take a look at last. But not least for caves.
Yes. I do want to recommend that there is technically a web client known as shin kgs sorry shin go kgs you can go to the website. It is currently in beta.
So bear that in mind but if you absolutely need a web interface for your ghost server you can still get a web interface with kgs but bear in mind the web interface is in fact in beta. That’s not of course to say the web interface will never come out of beta. I’m sure it will perhaps by the time your children have graduated college.
Assuming you’d haven’t had them yet this next server is older than cage yes. But it has a much newer design to it for that we are going to go to what some people may have referred to in the past as igs you may have heard the term. Nowadays.
It is quite called panda net you can search for it quite easily once again. It’s the first result once you are on panda net. You have a link here to go register your account you can pick your username your email your country and your rank make sure you do pick a real email for this one.
Because they are going to be sending you your at least. I think they still do this they’re going to send you a confirmation email so make sure you do have a valid email when signing up after that you can go and click your pan the net client they have an android ios client as well over here on the right hand side one thing. I will mention very briefly here is they do have this weird net social plaza.
Thing for you to be able to link other people a game of yours that you’ve played on server similar to ogs. But unlike ogs they need to be signed into panda net. I believe in order to actually download and look at your game so they do have a web interface for that but it’s a bit tricky so once you have panda net installed and open.
You will have a screen similar to this one you have the login in the upper right hand corner just go ahead and throw in your name and password go ahead and remember that sure why not once you’ve logged on one of the first things you will notice is a veritable wall of don players note. This is subject to the time of day. This is a more of a japanese server where the previous two servers.
We’ve looked at so far have been western servers as a result more towards the prime time and less towards. D like. 4 00 am in japan.
You will see a lot of players currently this server has almost 3000 players signed on which brings it above the number of players currently on ogs or kgs even at their peak. But again that is very very determined by what time of day you log on if you log on during the wee early morning hours. You probably aren’t going to get some whereas right now for example.
I can just go ahead and. Look and see that it’s about 3 pm. In tokyo.
Right now so it makes sense that there are many more players currently online benefit of that is if you want to look at stronger players games. As you can see you’ve got a wide range of players you can choose from if you are trying to get a stronger game game the mid and high down ranges depending on the time of day. You have a much greater chance of being able to do that as well getting a game is fairly easy you set your rank at registration from that you just want to go ahead and click find opponent you’ve got a very very simple interface here you can decide what you want to play against is it due on either an even game.
Only are you willing to play someone one or two stones stronger or weaker than you you’ve got a nice little heat easy drop down for your time limit whether it’s rated or if your gonna take free games. And then you just click ok. It is nice and simple.
It is also comes with the added bonus benefit as this is one of the first servers that we’re gonna look at where you can sometimes see professional games going on official title matches going on in various countries. And if you feel like kicking back. And watching a pro game you can do that on here now i would be remiss.
If i did not mention seeing this is our third server that we are looking at if i did not point out that various servers tend to have a reputation for or various styles of play on panther net for example. We have a bit more of a japanese player base and japanese players. Though this is slowly changing have more of a reputation for building and influential kind of games rather than some of the crazy fighting aggressive games.
That you might find on other servers. That we’re going to be mentioning now these next couple of server side. We mentioning are a little bit more difficult to log on to this next.
One is called wp duck. It can be a little bit finicky logging on to it you can just google wp duck. Once again first result.
We’ve got a lovely client download that we have access to right here once we download it and launch the program. You will see that you will need a username and password you can find that happily enough on wboc um make sure you click register two that you will need to start off with a valid email registration so you type your email they send you a confirmation you click the link in the confirmation. They bring you back to the website to continue your registration process.
So again a little bit more finicky. But once you are through with that you can go and put your username and password into here. And this is where finicky point number two comes up you will notice that after you click login preferably choosing korea one because usually the largest room available we are going to sit here for a while and stare at this screen.
If you are tired of staring at this screen you can go back and select your server again reselect your room reflect the server go ahead and log in again and then it actually goes ahead and connects don’t ask me what that’s about i have no idea this server has fewer players than the server. We were just on pan annette it is also regarded as a little bit of a weaker server because even though you’ll see a bunch of eight down seven tons and blah blah blah. The server rating system.
Here is a little bit on the weaker side because a lot of the stronger players are playing on either. Panda net or one of the two other servers were about to go over in a minute now this server also comes with the very first warning that we’re going to be hearing twice more if you are a beginner and you are trying to play here online. The glorious intertubes oh just kgs fairly friendly to play on panda net can be okay.
But once we get into w. Baduk and these last two servers. It’s a little bit more difficult.
Reason being is you will run into people who are not the real rank. They say they are you might be sitting down trying to play against a 15 q. And you might run across a 5 q.
One done posing as a 15 q. Instead. If you write into one of these people don’t really worry about it just treat.
It as a free teaching game shrug it off and employ the next one maybe review it with either a friend or an ai. But i’m not getting into that to see where your mistakes were and then just go ahead and grab your next game actually getting a game is a little bit more. Difficult you have to go into automatic requests.
You’ve set your rank. Already and then you have to wait for a challenge challenge will pop up with someone takes the game requests. And then you can agree to the game settings.
They’re not a lot to it this next server is going to be a little bit more challenging to get on to you at first. We are going to type in ty gem goat or we can go to ty gem. Go calm from there.
We can go and click register. We are brought to here where we have to choose user id password throw in an email we do get to choose our rank which is fantastic and only go up to 3 don. So if you are above 3.
Done you will have to start there and prove yourself you can pick your country. Which is fantastic and of course you can choose in avatar. Which is all excellent.
It gets a little bit more difficult if you want to actually download the client to sign on to the server to play because if like me you are using chrome. You’ll notice a huge blank spot in this upper right hand corner. Where it looks like something ought to be if on the other hand you open it with internet explorer what do you know there is actually a direct file download we can click on that will install ty gem global setup dot exe so we can actually log on to the bloody server.
So if you load the sub site up in chrome. I think also in firefox. And you see nothing here that is your reason on the bright side.
They do have an app that you can go and snag for yourself. So you can play this on your mobile device. Which is fantastic and once you are sitting in front of the client.
All you have to do assuming you’ve already registered is put in your name password choose your server. But again this is where it gets a little bit difficult if you want to join the main room. Which is a premium when you click login you will notice that one is full so it’ll redirect you and then you’ll notice that one is full so it’ll redirect you and then you’ll notice that one is full so it’ll redirect you and finally we found a room that we could actually enter it only has 92 players in it and not some problem reason for that is there is in fact.
A limitation placed on us happy western players that we can’t really join a server. If it has too many people in it that sucks never fear. Though a lot of times after you’ve joined a server.
You can redirect yourself tell the server. That you wanted to go into apparently it didn’t work for me that time so we could choose another server that has a lot of players maybe hopefully dear god let me okay as you can see this is one of the main problems. I am obviously not about to get a game in a server with no people.
This is a huge issue. The upside is if you do manage to get into a server. That actually has more people yay.
We just got into world that carries with it 3400 players. What makes it more than panda net. And more than double yuba duke and of course.
More than caves. Yes. And ogs.
Then we can definitely get a game at regardless of whatever our level is because there are plenty of high don’s. There are plenty of middling q’s there even plenty of dv ks. There are lot of servers.
You can switch through to find them. It’s just the song and dance of jumping room to room to find someone to play can be a pain in the butt. If you can get it down.
It’s great you can just go ahead and click quick match you’ve got five minutes ten minutes a twenty minute game easy fast selection and then it’ll go and find someone for you to play with so once you’re up and running once you’re used to the server. It’s pretty good however. I will warn newer players like on w.
Baduk. A lot of the lower rank players are really the lower rank players. You think they are a lot of them can be higher level players in sheep’s clothing.
So to speak. So if you’ve got a game against someone. And you get your butt handed to you pay that in mind on the bright side.
It’s easy to see someone’s wins and losses for example. If i was a 1q and i was trying to get a game against another 1q and this guy popped up and i see that he has a hundred eleven wins and 5 losses maybe just maybe i won’t play that person. Because he might be one of the wolves in sheep’s clothing that i was just mentioning so as long as you kind of like keep a keen eye on their wins.
And losses. You usually can’t avoid the people who aren’t quite. What they say they are now.
I will sadly. Bear bad news. To the mac.
Crowd you’ll notice the download was an exe file you’ll notice had an app for your mobile. But what if for whatever ungodly reason you are using an apple computer perhaps a laptop. Why not they only start at about three thousand dollars.
And let’s not even consider talking about the mac pro’s well. If you are one of the unfortunate individuals who are playing on a mac. You are going to have to get very very familiar with virtual machines because as of right now to my knowledge.
There is no native mac support for you sorry there just isn’t all right now. What is arguably the server that gives most people the most amount of trouble. But also in my opinion the most worth it is our final server coming in called fox wq.
If we search fox wq or go to fox wq comm. We entered this and at that point. We’re probably like screw it i’m out i’ve got others i got other options we’re going elsewhere.
But stick with me our story gets better translations aside you can see on this screen immediately that there is in fact this wonderful little pc button. We can click that ok great from here. We’re at another page that probably doesn’t make a lot of sense to us.
However hovering in the middle. There is an option right here for an install dot exe. If we click it and install it we get to bring up a screen like this now if yours for some reason.
Did not automatically put yourself in english. Not to worry you can click the little cog wheel the second one down is the language option and then you can go to this bottom selection here and choose english or if you speak japanese or chinese or korean. You know select one of those you’d be my guest from there we’ve got a little handy dandy little register button.
We’ll go ahead and click that it’ll bring you back to a registration page. Eventually all right the registration page looks like this fairly straightforward. Your username.
An actual name can make that up got your email. Password. Firm.
Password. Much like ty gem. You can only go to a maximum of three don.
You can choose your country and of course. Your avatar. Once you’ve jumped through those hoops.
You can go and easily log back in and unlike thai gem after we let it load a bit loading times will change depending on time of day. More players who are on the server will take longer to load them case in point right now you can see there are 21000. Players here.
And that is why i said this one is well worth playing on this is currently the internet’s number one go server. There are a lot of variations in a rank because there are literally tens of thousands of players that will be playing on here depending on time of day. Obviously.
The prime time of japan. China and korea. You will be getting many many many more players then you see if it is not as you can see it’s all in one room under like thai gem.
Where you are hopping between different rooms struggling to find people you know thousands of people are on. But you can’t always get in the room to join them and this one on the bright side 21000. People.
In one room. If you want to play a game you’ll notice that this button may or may not be in english for you you click the green button and it will begin auto challenging everyone in your rank range ignore. The fact that mine’s in chinese or ignore the fact mines in chinese.
I said it that way intentionally once you have a person here and you try to get a game note mine left immediately because he got tired of waiting for me. But you can take differences in the time settings. The bo yomi periods and how many of them there are i would usually keep it at ten thirty three or five thirty three or maybe.
Fifteen thirty three at most and then you can go and request your game. The client is in english again bear in mind. The client is in english as long you’ve set yourself to english or japanese or chinese or whatever.
The counting will be in english. The game. Requests will be in english mine.
Personally are not because i’ve done a couple of cute little edits because i just prefer hearing. Chinese counting. It’s just what i got used to be i played on thai chime.
An awful lot and the english countdown just bugs me so don’t worry about that it is in english except for possibly that green button. It’s weird just accept. It now one benefit of this particular server.
Grilled fox of uq or foxy as we usually call it is it does have the option for an app download here as you can see or of course the pc exe now you will note immediately. That is once again not mac. Friendly.
And once again. There are ways around that beyond. The scope of this video involving virtual machines or other handy.
Little methods. I will say that if you do have a mac and you need to jump through a few hoops in order to play on here. It is well worth it this is by far the largest range of players you are going to find online.
You can get a game anytime. Any day. Just beware newer players sometimes like i mentioned.
W. Baduk. Anti gem.
You can’t of course run into some people who are not quite the rank. They say they are on the bright side is that’s usually right bright and in your face immediately when you get a game request you can see the green o’s and the red x. Is how many wins and losses.
They’ve had in the last 20 games if they’re nothing but wins you know something’s fishy there and you’re probably gonna lose to them. But that could be a unique teaching opportunity in and of itself. So it’s not all bad now with all of these different servers.
It can be difficult to decide where you want to play if you’re a newer player you kind of have an idea where you want to play if you are a high don player you kind of have ideas now where you want to play if you’re more of a passive ability kind of player you might be leaning more towards your og sks and panama. If you’re more of a fighty player you’re probably gonna lean more towards a gem and fox because that is reputation of those servers now i will point out regards to the reputation. I do recommend spreading out your playing on pretty much any and all servers you have time for because getting a nice range of players being introduced and having experience with all nice range of styles is only going to be to your benefit.
If you spend all of your time. Playing against let’s say buildi types and never against the crazy people who are gonna try to fight everything then you might wind up weak to fighting players or if you spend all of your time fighting if someone’s actually trying to build you might be floored by the idea that this person over here isn’t trying to rip your face off. And it’s just trying to like build up and you might not know what to do there either so getting a nice rounded experience across all the servers should help you be a nice well rounded player you do not have to stick to just one i do not recommend sticking to just one especially.
Since you have all these different options of all these different players all around the world that you get to play against people even twenty years ago. Did not have all of the options that you do today so whatever server.
