“Everyone welcome to today s episode of candy kaya today. I m here at deidre deidre pilote founder of meili media and we are going to be talking about how can start your own pr agency stay tuned solo. Deidre. Hey.
Thank you for asking tell the viewers a little bit about yourself hello. Everybody i am beautiful oh. I am the founder and senior publicist of making media. I currently reside here in atlanta.
And also the creator is just pr over to the focus platform. Okay awesome. So tell us a little bit about how you got into pr. Oh.
You know what is interest interesting story um. I come from an athletic background. Okay a sketball on the track. It s all i know how to do so i was watching the game derwin and melanie you know everybody loves german had a image consultant.
Slash publicist beyond what she does because she s hanging out with all the athletes so when i google what a publicist was i thought a major in pr tour state university. The ready issue and from there it just took off. I m not really into sports pr just yet well not anymore. But i m going back into it.
So i do a lot of lifestyle pr faith based. Okay. You are beauty as well as fashion. And i know a lot of mystery.
As well okay. So tell us what type of clients are heard of meili media. Like i said the lifestyle beauty. So if you have a shampoo and conditioner.
You try to go throughout if you are a hair stylist or though if you are casting you come to church if you re doing an event here in the city. My firm does think that publicity where we get the media out and we also get the attendees there to your events. We do a lot of fashion or work with project runway. It s already a cost we launched his a the women of atlanta.
Which is a fashion show. Oh that was cater towards breast cancer awareness. Something i might do that about a year and a half ago and we also like to do events here we were entertainers. I m currently working with 1kq with hip hop artists they just started to look crazy um independently will reach records home i represent my pastor doesn t wanna travel and her husband perhaps nick travitt and like i said.
We just do a lot of lifestyle beauty based stuff so not necessarily everything because i feel like if you are you have avocation okay alright perfect. So you re 27 yes you found it mailing you know what is a pr agency. So basically you created your own pr agency. I did i need i was in corporate america.
The work with hp i worked with bt i work with missa. Frankfurt. Which is a german based rational organization. Okay nice to work at this will fulfill.
I was brought into hmm like you name it i ve done it..
But my last position ended and i m going to start. My agency and i gotta got foursome to entrepreneurship. But it s been a good thing i started my agency mainly media. I actually named it after my grandmother okay mary lee and they filed her bailey when i used to call her gyrus.
I saw and i was like yeah and the reason. Why i chose the main method. My grandmother cousin while she s gone. I wonder do something to remember her.
But she was a type of person that if you don t do something you got to do it all the way or not at all and that s how we are we re very results driven. We affirm this very results driven. We don t do it just because we do it because we want to see the clients happy right alright perfect. So that s really inspiring.
I hope. She s inspiring you guys right now you future publicist. So here mainly media. Tell us what goes into creating a pr agency.
Um basically i must say this first educate yourself. And it doesn t miss you in the classroom even when i was attending on georgia state. I still wanted information elsewhere. I interned with whoever i can t turn with shadow.
Who erica shadow and i joined plenty of pr organizations. Just to get a feel for what the actually industry is and it depends on what kind of feel you want to do so. That s why i said early and find your niche so find your niche do a lot of research on whatever you re trying to do if you re working and duty do a lot of research on a beauty industry. Go and follow those beauty publicist for me.
It took. I didn t i did my farm up at zero another budget. I started out with an email and social media. Okay.
But you do need to invest in a website. You do any of this in a quality logo. You ll need invest in a database and everybody knows what every public. Suppose you re only as strong with your media list.
So you have to have a database to keep those contracts. Then also network go out there go to these events that they have i mean description in lemon. It s always something going on go network on build your resume. If it means volunteering to help nothing next publicist to build your brand.
So do it i think in today s time we got so caught up in chasing a paycheck that we forget the purpose mm hmm. So when i tell you when i first started out. I was like what you need me to do okay. Well attend or whether you need to run your carpet.
Let people know who you are just funneling those small things so i will say start off that way first and then also give it to pr for the right reasons. If you re coming just network with celebrities and tim no red carpet event. So if you re looking to give us a pr you really want to work hard for the piping yes. But if it s just what a parties don t do it be a promoter and being clever lower okay so when you were creating your agency did you have to get a llc.
What s not the legal stuff that you have to get yes..
I got a partnership because just me i m going on the show. But if you are gonna llc that s good to get your business license. I ll tell everybody these get your business license. If you don t get nothing else get a business license.
But it also gives 150 each other go into business with me amish. It s by myself. Where i didn t have a partner and i still don t so just depends on the level or how many people you want to fight of your filters all right so tell us what are some do s and don ts when you are going into pr as trying to start an agency. Okay i think i told you know so don t be trying to go in here network.
The celebrities know fret nasa with the celebrities also don t think about the parties. I don t think about the glitz and glamor stuff also a lot of people carry that title publicist and they throw it around mm hmm. Don t get in it just to be caught a publicist. I work the way i work and i can t speak for no other pr person.
But my success is always measured on mic licenses right if they re happy if they re out there their brain is getting exposed and i m doing my job. However do not be out here thinking you re the poster your must be the one on the red carpet. That s not happy so i think that just my biggest thing that s just my mother some determining factors to consider when you re trying to figure out if a pr agency is legit um. I would say definitely do your research on the front right um.
Do your research. See what kind of press. They ve gotten for their clients. See who s talking about them also a red flag and this is like maybe the number one red flag.
I think real publishers will agree with me if somebody is like saying you re content to me and you want pr. But i m guaranteeing you the cover of essence. I m getting like no question about it make phone call that s a red flag because no press is guaranteed the relationships with the press is but not actual prints you re not the work really really hard and then another thing is do you know research on their pants. Clients or form apply.
And see what they re saying about them right so i just say research research and then in their goods. Guarantee and press. Not terrific. Okay yeah all right so tell us a little bit about a day in the life of you this is my book it can range from getting up.
At 4 00. In the morning to getting up. At 9 00. In the morning or not sleeping at all depends on what i have going on what kind of silhouette.
But at the end of life. I wake up i pray i m free and then i read my mind we re gonna spend at least 15 minutes and i try all the time. But i don t so my passion is watching. But i pray i read and did i check my emails like that s the first thing.
I do the show i check social media and i check social media. Because i have a business page to another page and then from there i m pitching. I m pitching on depends on what client is or what i m pitching trying to get them pressed or if i have an event. I m calling the venue and make sure we got everything on goal.
I m calling the planner making sure everything is my my band aids checking emails making phone calls your sometimes. Business meetings sometimes. I m on a conference. Call.
It just is ever a certain day that things are going the same..
No that s not the case. So it all depends on what you have going on. But the morning can start as early as 5 00 or just on the penis and it can in vegas for your own. Oh.
So they just all the p in spirit never stops all right you just so now i want to get just a little bit of your advice. What are some of your best tips to building your clientele um. I would definitely say a referral program. Okay they help some people and then also going out there and networking.
It s a lot of people that need pr. But they don t know wendy s right so going out there telling them what it is and how we can work with each other. And then also it s okay to get in the press. Like for me.
I have people interviewing me now like from example and they can see me. And i m like hey i want to know more much and what you do what you can do it s a sunday. Forsake network network network network. And it s okay to export girls.
Because a lot of people a lot of poses. They don t do everything they have a certain niche. So maybe you re a publicist and you work in the sports arena. But you have somebody that has a beautified over that s not your niche.
So you can refer them to me. I work with some publicist like that troops so we can change our clients. If that s not your mission you know so did your next question. What are your best tips to getting your clients names.
No so basically. It s all about pitching. Oh that pitching is setting my email or my phone call from everybody. That s sending them.
An email mine has to stand out. And what i typically do is first of all i read the journalists work for watch. It and a lot of people a lot of publicist messed up right. There how can you ask me for something you don t even know my work exactly so i compliment don t work.
And i try to what is the word. I m looking for coordinated with decline that i have sold on some similarities and one they would be interested in it so i m trying to send my email. The part of my phone calls hard. Depends on how they edit and watch their communication and why you should feature.
My planning and i m also i m taking them to these reactiveness and getting them on a red carpet and getting photo ops with different peoples and celebrities and then i m also planning their own events. Getting the media. There i think it s all about media and also communicating whatever their brand message key to see their target audience all right okay good all right so next question. What advice do you have for those who want to get out there want to start their own pr agency.
But are a little free pray pray so what i m going to say is of course pray if you feel like this is what you want to do and you feel like god is telling you go for it pray and then also invest in your career. That doesn t necessarily mean spending. Thousands of dollars that can simply mean are you having a workshop. And you know a little fear.
Let me film right don t you have a book oh look out shanta 99..
If any gives you the start of kind of become a publicist and what sets you apart to be in a great focuses so invest educate yourself on what you want to do make sure it s the right thing that you want to do make sure you have a passion for it because i ma tell you this industry. I mean you gotta have a vegetable. I like helping people period. So i have a passion for it cuz it can get crazy.
But have a passion for it invest in your career. Educate research all these things if you want to select are on your farm. And then also i would say making sure you re doing things in a timely manner. If you can t afford to trademark a business right now wait.
But get your business license first so don t i do everything at once because i didn t i didn t do everything it took me a while to get everything look not even all here now i m get the rest of the stuff later so don t try to do it you can t spin honest money that s all money and you can t you ain t even got money to advertise yourself. So you gotta be able to be strategic yourself alright alright. So that s pretty much every question. I had oh wait no it s not i always hit you with one more so dedra this is a finish my sentence.
I want my clients to know all right you tell everyone a little bit about your platform and how they can keep up with you yes. I m also the creator of it s just pr which is a publicist platform we just aspire to inspire expiring a publicist.
