Ranks presents another episode of before you buy the show. We give you some straight straight up gameplay and some first impressions of the latest games. Releasing as always i jake baldino and today we’re talking about mafia.
3. A very interesting game that over the past few days. Seems like it’s had a bit of a rocky release and we will talk about that.
But let’s just get into the game itself first first things first. I think this is a fun game that accomplishes some of its goals. Very well.
But also kind of misses the mark on some others let’s get into it what i really really like about this game are the story and the characters and the vibe and just the whole world itself. I think lincoln clay is a really interesting. Main character coming back from the vietnam war looking for a place to exist with a chip on his shoulder and a quest for a revenge.
It makes for a very interesting and engaging story not to mention the fact that they actually do explain like because he’s a soldier. He can kill people and it’s really cool and fun because you do that a lot in this game.
But at least it makes sense in the context. He’s great and so were the cast of characters around him. They all have their own personalities.
You understand where they’re coming from you get their goals and stuff like that also i really like the nice nod to mafia 2. With vito being in the game that to me was huge because i loved mafia 2. And since we are talking about the story.
I do want to say if you did like mafia 2. For its big set piece scripted moments of great action scenes and memorable stuff like that mafia. 3.
Has a lot of that that’s where mafia. 3. Does surprisingly feel a lot like mafia 2 mafia 3 just brings them to added context of the late 60s racial tensions and stuff like that and the way the game handles it all i think is done really well.
But race is kind of like the background. The real story here is just a straight up crime story and i think it’s pretty good the way.
The story is told is very interesting what i really liked is that it’s kind of like a netflix crime drama documentary style thing where you’re constantly flashing back and forth to the past and to the present with people and experts and witnesses being interviewed and basically explaining what happened the game bounces around a lot of the intro is very long. And there’s just a lot of emphasis on story. Here.
And it all pops up organically within the world. But like i said those big action scenes and some of those moments are just so great a lot of the games tone often feels like some of it is inspired like the levity and stuff very much like goodfellas and then some of the grimmer darker shoot is very taxi driver and i think it’s a really good mix. New bordeaux is a decent gameworld it looks pretty nice.
It’s very unique. It’s got a new orleans style. Feel which we have seen in games before but with the whole race thing here and there and intentions and and people being mean to you and cops being a little bit overly judgy.
Just kind of add a little bit more interesting context. It’s also got a great look because there are the bad neighborhoods. There’s a downtown french quarter and then there’s also the typical kind of 50s style suburbia.
Where everything is just clean and perfect. It’s a really great backdrop for when you’re shooting kkk members with a shotgun.
Now speaking of shooting. People when the gameplay comes in things get a little mixed here so to speak the shooting mechanics are very simple. But they are satisfying the cover works and the shooting and the actual violence.
Feels raw and punchy the sound design is good the aiming is good. But there’s a lot of focus on light stealth mechanics that feel very very basic maybe something like if you played uncharted. 4.
Or tomb raider. It’s very simple you just kind of walk around and navigate a very flat area hide behind crates. Sneak up and stealth kill.
People. Honestly with the shooting in the stealth. You’ve probably played it before.
In a bunch of other games. There’s not really much new here.
But i will say it’s good it’s solid. It’s serviceable and i did have fun playing it it can get really really violent and i don’t know sometimes that’s really fun and entertaining the driving. However leaves a lot to be desired.
I’d almost go as far as to say that it kind of sucks while mafia. Too focused on realistic kind of boat like driving where the cars felt old and slow and chunky here i think they went a little bit overboard and making the cars feel a little bit too floaty and rkt and easy the way cars turn and drift around corners. While it looks nice and it does feel good because you can get any turn no problem it just doesn’t really have a lot of challenge.
And it just doesn’t like i said feel right. But another part that i do enjoy and you might enjoy this if you play the old godfather games is basically the mission structure. And how you you earn and gain territory.
Now. It’s like a lot of other open world games. There’s a lot of stuff on the map that you got to check off.
But what i like about it here is that it’s all designed around actually fueling lincoln clay’s goal. You never feel like you’re around and like fishing or going bowling.
Like i mentioned in another video. You actually just kind of feel like they’re pursuing getting revenge getting money and taking over the city. You know what i mean completing these objectives like burning weapon caches interrogating key personnel taking out lead guys and stealing cars and doing all those things feel like you’re actually dismantling the mob piece by piece and it makes sense.
And it doesn’t totally feel like side quests. Busy stuff all of it kept me really just entertained. And what i liked is how the story and moments would be triggered just by doing certain things in the world like progressing through a sidequest like just racking up some territory would trigger the next part of the game.
Also it’s worth noting. I can’t get into detail without going on for too long. But you dole out different territories to your three other commanders in the game.
And you have sit downs with them where you negotiate who gets what and it’s very interesting and it’s hard to make these decisions because it affects the characters they can bail on you you can be forced to kill them or they can give you more good. There’s a lot of stuff in the game world you can get from calling upon things with your radio. You can get cars delivered to you you can get a bunch of goons to show up and help you beat up some people you can get a van that pulls up and gives you weapons and ammo and you can also pay someone to bribe.
The cops or cut. The phone lines.
Basically. What this is is kind of the whole game itself is like a beefed up version of mafia. 2.
With more open world sensibilities were you like me did you play mafia. 2. And really enjoy it but feel like there wasn’t really much more to do other than the main story well mafia.
3. Definitely answers those problems i do have to acknowledge the graphics of the performances and the motion capture and everything else they do the faces everything is great the performance is great the sound design is great. But overall in some angles.
And some lighting. The game doesn’t look that great but then other times in other lighting. It looks fantastic so it’s very much a mixed bag god i hate using that phrase and of course.
We also have to acknowledge for you pc players. There is a 30 frames per second cap.
2k has told me that they are going to release a patch in the next few days that uncaps it to 60 frames per second and do whatever you want. But honestly that was a weird choice for them to do that out of the gate. I don’t understand why they would do that and it sucks to be playing this thing as of right now at 30.
This would perform well otherwise yes for me on a 980ti it ran perfectly. But then again it doesn’t seem like the game is that graphically demanding. I’m gonna end on a high note with something that i really liked and that is the licensed soundtrack.
There is so much licensed music in this game from the time period. That it just heightens them to a much better place some of the action scenes with the right song from the radio from the seventies. Some classic rock just hits.
So well you’ll find yourself playing for a few hours. And keep hearing new songs on the radio and going to yourself wow they got this song in this game. Too.
It’s crazy. The amount of licensed tracks of recognizable songs that are in this game.
So personally yes. I do like mafia. 3.
A lot i’m having a lot of fun with it. But there are definitely problems and it’s gonna turn off some people i will say if you are somebody like i said who liked mafia 2. But maybe wanted a little more gameplay out of it mafia.
3. Is definitely the game for you if you’ve never played the series before you might be a little 50 50 here. If you like a lot of story and you like that focus mafia.
3. Is great if you’re really looking for something like you know grand theft auto. 5 or saints row.
This is not the game for you and you know some issues like i said graphical problems and the driving not being really that great at all definitely hold back this game from greatness. But i do think it is worth a try some people are definitely going to disagree with me and some people are gonna leave some really racist in the comments.
But that’s the way the world works so guys that’s mafia 3. As always with before you buy i give you some pros some cons and some personal opinion thrown in there. So now i want to hear yours in the comments have you guys started mafia.
