Today, newyorkcityvoices.org would like to introduce to you Mass Effect Lead Writer Speaks Out, Says Bioware Became Too Corporate, Joins New Studio. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Is safe to say that bioware is not in the best place right. Now. This this is a studio that s had a string of poorly received game releases and to mention that because so many by our veterans are leaving the studio or have already left the studio. The general perception and optics is that this isn t the same bioware of the yesteryears of the golden days.
And that bioware will never truly live up to that because the people who made bioware great have left as for what the people who left the former veterans have been up to well there s one particular venture that i found quite interesting that i think is worth looking at so among the people who left bioware among the veterans who decided to jump ship after a long time with the once famous studio was james olin. He was one of the designers for baldur s gate. And he left bioware after a whopping 22 years. There here is his twitter.
You can read right here that he was the creative director or lead designer of games like star wars. The old republic baldur s gate. One and two neverwinter nights star wars knights of the old republic and dragon age and when he left back in july 12. 2008.
Een. He said after 22 years i ve retired from bioware. I ve loved my time with anthem star wars dragon age and dungeons dragons. But i need to take a break from the industry and work on something a little smaller and more personal.
But now he s heading this studio that i ll talk about in a bit somebody else who left more recently was chad robertson. Who was head of life services for anthem. And he was also before that the head of technology and studio director at bioware austin. So he s not just all about life service.
He also has experience with managing studios and the like he left back in november. He said. This is my last week with bioware. I ve been with the company for 14 years and am grateful for everything.
I ve been a part of here. So tour anthem in austin studio. And bioware are in good hands. You can expect great things ahead.
Yeah. I ll believe that when i see it. But now you can see right here. He s general manager at archetype entertainment.
What is archetype entertainment well this is a studio that was created by wizards of the coast. The company bind games like magic. The gathering and dungeons and dragons. I mean i don t think wizards of the coast.
Really needs much of an introduction. This is a studio that was open back in april 24th. 2019. So this was before chad robertson.
Left bioware. And joined this new studio at this point..
Only james olin had joined this studio. And he had a pretty big role to play here so here s how the stamen reads wizards of the coast hires gaming industry veteran james olin to lead new studio wizards of the coast a subsidiary of hasbro today. Announces. James olin.
Will open a new studio based in austin texas. All in a 23 year games. Industry. Veteran whose credits include baldur s gate baldur s gate 2.
And neverwinter nights. All based on the dungeons dragons universe will lead the studio s creative development of new ip and then james olin said. I didn t think i would be coming back to the games industry so soon but working with wizards is a once in a lifetime opportunity our mutual love for rpgs world building and interactive storytelling is a perfect match. So at the time back in april 2000.
19. This is all we knew about wizards of the coast new studio. We didn t even have a name then but then fast forward to january 31st. 2020.
And we ve got news here that wizards of the coast has chosen a name for the studio and that they ve brought on board. Another former buyer veteran. It reads right here wizards of the coast has now revealed the studio s name archetype entertainment. And confirmed that the autonomous division based.
In austin. Texas will be the new home of another by our alumni chad robertson. Who most recently served as head of life services on anthem until his departure last november now interesting to note is that they really highlight the term autonomous division. Here as if to insinuate that they re not going to act as one of those publishers.
That s going to interfere and try to do things their way and try to mar the creative vision of the game director and then scrolling further down the eurogamer. Article. Continues with olin is to be archetypes head of studio. While robertson.
Who was also head of technology and studio director at bioware austin will be vice president and general manager that brings us to yet. Another former bioware dev. What i d like to talk about who also decided to join the studio so back in mar 2018 you may recall that druker passion. Who is this prominent writer for bioware left the studio for a second time to join 21st century fox s new game studio that seemingly didn t work out as now fast forwarding to february 12.
2020. It s been confirmed that mass effect. Lead writer joins x. Pyr veterans at new wizards of the coast studio.
Jukka. Passion. Is now part of archetype entertainment. As relate here by this polygon.
Article and right here you can see the kinds of credits. That he has he was senior writer for knights of the old republic..
He was a writer for jade empire. Lead writer for mass effect 1 2. He contributed to a boulder skate and neverwinter nights. I mean suffice to say that druker passion was a major part of why so many of these now renowned titles were so successful.
Why people were so invested in those stories. And now we re learning that this man is also deciding to join archetype entertainment. Joining other former by our veterans to create these rpg experiences that they want to make without corporate influence and speaking of corporate influence. This is something that drew kerr passion kind of talked about especially with his time at bioware and how that studio changed from something that was driven by passion to something that was seeped in a corporate culture.
He begins by talking about what he s been up to working on you know role playing campaigns and the d d. World and stuff. As some ventures. Went.
Well others not so much and then he added fortunately for me. I have another gig. Now. I m proud to announce that i m lead writer for archetype entertainment hell.
Yes. That s a really good sign to have a lead writer. Like that as part of your studio. Founded by james olin.
The creative genius behind bio hits like baldur s gate kochore in dragon age archetype is also a new video game studio under the wizards of the coast umbrella and i haven t been this excited to work on a project in a long long time wizards of the coast being the company that owns the dungeons dragons ip and with a lot of these by our veterans. Having worked on dungeons dragons related games like baldur s gate. And the like this just seems like a match made in heaven so hopefully this venture just yields. Incredible results through compassion.
Then talked about his time at bioware and this is where he kind of gets very blunt about his past experience. He said. I ve been in the video game industry for twenty years now when i started at bioware everything was fresh and exciting. It was a dream job challenged people working together to create epic games like baldur s gate.
Kotor mass effect and dragon age. But as we grew and became more successful things changed. We became more corporate. We were less able to make what we loved and the teams were pushed to create games based on market research rather than our creative instincts and passions.
My dream job became just a job and i lost the enthusiasm and excitement. I once had this is something that doesn t come as a huge surprise to me. And i don t think anyone else is really surprised to hear this this is especially apparent. When you look at a game.
Like anthem recall that in that jason schreyer report in which he exposed the troubled development of anthem. There was a time when anthem was a very different. And more unique game before it turned into another mood or shooter and then with dragon age. 4.
The original concept for that game was scrapped and the development was rebooted in order to make it more of a life service type of experience at least that s what kotaku has reported and so when you hear stories like that and when you look at botched launches. Like and the man mass effect..
Andromeda is very clear that as jukka passion. Says here bioware has become much more corporate and that has had an adverse effect. When it comes to the quality of the games that they publish the quality of the vision. Just the general management surrounding.
The studio just everything feels off that seems to be in large part white druker passion decided to jump ship. Say goodbye and pursue something that would fulfill him rather than being stuck at this studio. Where he lost enthusiasm and excitement that he once had and that s probably a similar case for a lot of other veterans who decided to up and leave to finish things off jukka passion said. But with archetype.
My passion has been rekindled the feel in the studio reminds me of my early days at bioware. I can feel the magic in the air and i don t think he s referring to the bye or magic. Where they justify crunching people to breakdowns. I think in this case.
He s referring to that creative sparkle in the air that s certainly. Very hopeful to see that druker passion is so excited about this after feeling very downtrodden about how bioware evolved and what it has become and then he finished things off with and even though i can t get too deep into the specifics of what we re doing yet. We are already generating plenty of excitement in the industry. I know we have big shoes to fill with bioware.
I was part of a legacy that will endure forever. We created some of the most beloved sea rpgs of the past two decades. But i truly believe an archetype. We have the talent and the opportunity to do something just as amazing this journey is only the beginning and i know it will be long and challenging.
But for the first time in a long time. I can t wait to travel down this path again judging by how he keeps bringing up bioware and talking about how he has big shoes to fill and how he believes they can do something just as amazing. I definitely get the sense that they re trying to fill the shoes and the void that bio are left behind with the games that they re working on and yeah. The types and quality of games that bioware used to make are sorely missed and while there are other studios out.
There who are doing a great job in the rpg sector. Having the former bioware deaths here. The veterans kind of hunkering down with wizards of the coast. I mean something feels a little more exciting here and i m genuinely excited to see what these not only talented.
But reinvigorated group of people are working on as for exact details on what it is that archetype entertainment is working on well you can find sort of hints and vague statements on the official website. Here. So here is what was written about the studio their goals and their current project. Our goal is to create the greatest story driven role playing games in the world.
Archetype entertainment is a game development studio in austin. Texas. Led by industry veterans from bioware and other triple a studios founded in 2019. Archetype is an autonomous division of wizards of the coast again an emphasis on autonomous kind of like what blizzard used to be to activision before activision began to interfere and now it truly is activision blizzard.
But in this case wizards of the coast and archetype entertainment. Seem to have a good working relationship and hopefully again it stays that way where they give the developers. All the creative freedom. They need we are assembling a world class team to build a multi platform role playing game set in a new science fiction universe.
So there we go. That s the genre science fiction..
You would think that go for like fantasy. Given their partnership with wizards of the coast and the way they tend to lean more towards fantasy. But they re going for sci fi. And i m all for that.
And it s gonna be multi platform. So we can probably expect it on pc and next. Gen consoles like ps4 and xbox series. X.
The statement continues at archetype. We believe there will always be a place for story driven role playing games hell yeah. That put the player at the center of an epic personal narrative with impactful choices. We re building games that represent the diversity of our audience.
We also believe that game studio should. Empower top developers and challenge them with ambitious projects that are shaped by a strong clearly communicated creative vision that almost feels like a dig at bioware. Who did not have a strong vision for anthem. And that was a major contributor for a white took so long to create this game.
And why it took so long to get out of pre production and in turn. Why they had so little time to develop the game and test the game. And that s why it turned out to be so broken and unpolished at launch. So right here they re saying.
We actually are going to have a strong vision clearly communicate that and empower the top developers rather than sort of bringing them down with mismanagement that kind of seems to be the vibe here this is just conjecture on my part regardless of whether this was intended as a dig at bioware or not the main point is that this is a good mission statement and you know it s all words. Now we ll see if this actually ends up panning out game companies often say a lot of things that don t turn out to be true. But i certainly wish the best for this studio. I hope they can realize the vision that they have and that they can maintain a good creative culture that empowers passion and not sort of corporate elements.
Like monetization and such i don t know that seems like a good team. It seems like they re working with the right people in the right company wizards of the coast. Seems to be a good part when it comes to creating these kinds of role playing games they recently licensed baldur s gate 3 to larian studios. And that s i think a great sign of a company that understands what people are looking for in our pgs.
Like this so i don t know i have a good feeling about this from the looks of it we ll probably have to wait a while before we get to find out exactly what they re working on there is a concept art right here that kind of hints at the aesthetic of the game maybe. But until we learn more let me know in the comments below. What your thoughts and opinions are about this new studio archetype entertainment. The partnership they have with wizards of the coast and the kind of game that they re making.
And what druker passion had to say about bioware in his time there in more recent years drop. A comment below and to be further updated on all things gaming. News reviews. And discussions.
