What s a homegroup well a homegroup is an easy easy way to share files and printers across all of the computers on your network home groups i can share pictures music videos printers documents very very simply the only catch is all of your computers on your network need to be running windows 7 and hey why wouldn t you windows 7 is a great operating system so let s go ahead and let s take a look now. If you ve just upgraded to windows. 7 from an older version of windows.
You might have seen this window. If you bought a new computer out of the box that had windows 7 on it the first time you boot. It up this might have come up. And you might not have known what to do and you cancel it.
But don t worry about that when we set up our laptop. I ll show you how to get back to this place when you see this what we need to do is set this up as a whole network. We need to let windows. Know that these this computer is part of our home network and all of the computers that we re going to have on our homegroup also have to be part of that home network.
So we re gonna click there and it ll take a little bit of time but i m not going to make you sit here and wait. It s just gonna go and find that home network. See it s connecting to it right now all right this computer has joined our home network and what we want to do is let s say that this is going to be our desktop computer that s in the family room. This is the one that everybody uses we ve got a pictures music on there all kinds of things.

This is the one that we re going to create our homegroup on and we re gonna share everything you see all the little check boxes here we can share pictures music videos. Documents. Let s check that and printers that s really good because we re only gonna have to have one printer and we ll be able to print on any computer off of any computer that s in our homegroup. All right let s choose next again this might take a little bit of time and when it s done.
It s going to ask us excuse me. It s going to give us a password because we re gonna need that password to join any of our other computers on our home network to our homegroup and there s our password now let s go ahead. I m gonna write it down my pen doesn t run out of ink. All right now i will finish this and let s take a look libraries and you will see there s our homegroup.
But first before we go there. Let s take a look documents will see that i have a number of documents music lots of music pictures have some great pictures and my trip to new york videos some home videos. Ok let s go to the home group. And we see that there are no other people in that home group.
That s because we haven t joined any computers to our home group. Before we go and do that i want to show you one more thing. This is our default printer and this is the printer that is connected to this computer. We re gonna access this printer from our laptop through our homegroup.

So let s go ahead and let s get to our laptop. Now alright here. We are at our laptop. And we re gonna have to do the same thing again now remember i told you if you didn t get that window.
If you shut that window down and ask you to join the home network. It s not a problem we ll go to our control panel. And you see here under network and inter internet choose homegroup and sharing options i m gonna click there and it s telling me this computer can t connect through a homegroup. But that s not true don t panic.
It s telling us that because we haven t joined it to our home network. Let s go ahead and click here on what is a network location hey look familiar we re just gonna click home network again and it ll go through the same process of connecting to our network. Once that done it asks us this time to join a homegroup instead of create a homegroup like we did before because it already detected that there is a homegroup on our network. Now this computer.
We re going to let s see if i show you i don t have any documents. I don t have any music except the sample music. But i don t want that pictures. I do have some pictures that i took of my television.

Don t ask why it s a long story in videos. I have no videos so we will share pictures. We re going to shared a key in case. We create a need now there s not a printer attached to this so.
We don t need that and we don t need music. Because we don t have any of that either let s go and choose next and here s where it s asking for that password let s hope that i get this in the right way. But if you don t or if you ve lost the password you ve forgotten it and you re trying to join a computer up to your homegroup well don t panic because i m gonna show you in a little bit how d it go ahead and there we go find that password and look at that we have joined our homegroup. Let s finish that go back down here to our libraries.
See that there is our homegroup and there is my desktop computer let s take a look we see documents all the documents that i have all my music my pictures and now these are on the other computer. But i m able to access them on my laptop and i can go ahead and even move one of these pictures. I m going to copy this into my own library on this computer. I can even go ahead and go to my home videos.
Now the really cool thing and something that saves you a lot of headaches. Especially if you re trying to network. Things in your own house is that we can go and also get to the printer. That s attached to the other computer see that there it is that s our printer and it even tells me that it is on my desktop.

That computer is available to us on this laptop even though it s plugged in we didn t have to share. It we didn t have to set it up as a network printer nothing like that alright let s go ahead. And let s go back to the desktop for a couple of minutes alright back in the desktop. I m gonna go here to my control panel back to my network and internet choose homegroup and sharing options.
And it opens this up now. I can change my home group settings. Maybe i don t want to share all of these folders. But i m okay with that i m also gonna do this though stream.
My pictures music and video to all the devices on my home network. That s really cool if i have some kind of a media player. I can stream all of the things that i have on this computer onto that other one and if i lost the homegroup password right here it gives it back to me all right i m gonna leave this at streaming save the changes i ll close up that window and that is how we go ahead and use home groups.
