My name is steven chavez. I am. A senior at at the university of california berkeley in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering and just thought i would take a little bit of time to show you young students out there how to really present.
A research poster.
So a couple of tips. I have one is you do not want to be nervous at all basically the judges look for professionalism they look for how well you can communicate and being nervous will completely basically turn the judges off from what youre trying to say and a way that you can avoid being nervous. Is you just you just practice.
A lot too you want to tell a story with your poster. So you dont want to just come up here and start talking about science. You want to tell the judges who you are what your work is why you picked that work what you did and how you did it and by making that sort of personal connection.
The judges will really feel like one they know you and theyll be able to really understand what youre talking about at a deeper level.
The third thing is actually goes into the poster design itself you want to label everything really consistently and make sure you have nice graphs so the main thing. I hear judges tell other people when theyre judging their posters is that they cant read their graphs so by having everything really nicely laid out it makes it easy for them to understand what youre saying. It makes it easy for them to get the to get the idea that youre trying to explain fourth is has to do with the writing itself basically you want to write.
Really concisely and a really short summary of every section of your poster. If you have a really popular poster or if someones too far away to hear what youre saying. Its really a big advantage for them to be able to read it and ask you questions after and basically the last thing is to use your poster to your advantage.
The whole reason you made this poster is so you can communicate science to them.
And by actually if that by actually coming over here and saying okay this diagram means this if you have to go up. Really close and point to each thing. Thats fine as long as they know what youre talking about and thats basically it so to sum it up one dont be nervous.
You want to tell a story about your poster basically why you did everything and who you are 3. You want to make sure everything is labeled really consistently and especially focus on your graphs. Because thats a big downfall for a lot of people 4.
