Households both alike in dignity in fair verona where we lay our scene from ancient ancient grudge break to new mutiny where civil blood makes civil hands unclean from forth fatal loins of these two foes. A pair of star crossed lovers take their life whose misadventured piteous overthrows doth with their death. Bury their parents strife the fearful passage of their death marked love.
And the continuance of their parents rage. Which but their childrens end nought could remove is now the two hours traffic of our stage. The which if you with patient ears attend what here shall miss our toil shall strive to mend i dont know about you but that doesnt sound like a love story to me does this sound like a romance to you right lads.
Weve got these two gangs fighting in the city. Some suicidal teenagers who fall in love will be about two hours. So nipple alous now if you need to and well fill you in on the details as we go.
Its more than an introduction. Its not saying right welcome to verona. We have terrible problems here with two families who are always fighting the capulets and the montagues.
Its absolutely dreadful its giving away the plot. Its giving away what in most things would be the twist at the end that the lovers dont live happily ever after that they dont even live and they dont die at the hands of their angry families or some awful twist of fate. A pair of star crossed lovers take their life suicide.
That that is not not romantic to me well so can we say about them well its a sonnet. We know its a sonnet because its in 14 lines. And we can have a quick look at the rhyming scheme its a b a b c d c.
D e f e f gg two households both alike in dignity dignity theyre both noble houses were not talking about the peasants verona yeah italy ancient grudge thats good isnt it ancient grudge this isnt just sort of somebodys had a falling out last week over who gets the next round in this is something that goes back in time. This is something thats been ongoing since ancient times. Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
So this is affecting the city itself this isnt just something thats confined to the two families. The civil blood the blood of the city. The civil hands the hands of the city.
The hands of the civilians from forth the fatal loins of these two foes. Oh. Thats nice isnt it fourth fatal foes.
Thats a nice bit of alliteration and consonants there with the f sounds a pair of star crossed oh no its written in the stars these poor kids. Never had a chance they were fated to fall in love they were fated to die and in shakespeares time people really did get right behind the idea of your fates were written in the stars your futures could be predicted in the stars youd visit astrologers youd go to people and ask to have your fortunes. Read and things like the horoscopes that you get in newspapers way back when in the tudor times.
They were far more into this take their life now whoa pair of lovers take their life. So these two star crossed. People are just so consumed by love that they stop existing as individuals as a pair they become literally.
One. There is only one life to take the fearful passage of their death. Mark.
Love. And the continuance of their parents rage. So they fall in love.
And the parents are still raging and which but their childrens end nought could remove so it doesnt matter that the kids are in love. The family still hate each other its not until romeo and juliet. Died.
That they can put aside their differences the fearful passage of their death marked love death. Marked love that that isnt something you normally describe lovers love isnt only written about to something that makes you stronger makes you braver brings things to life. Its not a fearful death marked.
Theres a couple of reasons. Why youre going to have a prologue going to see a play wasnt something fancy. It wasnt something youd get dressed up for it wasnt an event.
It was a going to the cinema and the people who went to plays werent well behaved you and it wasnt something that everybody sort would go in and sit down quietly and thered be a hush to send so youd have a prologue somebody would walk out and begin speaking and that would kind of just get everyones attention they stopped chatting to their mates. Theyd stop buying peanuts to find out what was going on because youd hear about plays youd hear the titles youd get sort of things passed around oh yeah tragedy of romeo and juliet. I dont know what i know the prologue would introduce it a little bit and a prologue in romeo and juliet.
Theres something for everyone. There isnt now theres love and romance for people after a rom com. Theres an death marked love theres ancient grudges.
So theres going to be i split sword fighting nice bit of romance. Yeah be quiet shut up listen to whats going on thats another reason for that line at the end. What here shall miss what youve missed here or you havent been able to hear because ive been trying to shout over people getting them to shut up and behave for the play to start thats now gunk to be filled in for you okay.
So thats the prologue to william shakespeares romeo and juliet. I hope youve enjoyed this episode of english explored and i hope youll join me next time for act. 1.
