Today, newyorkcityvoices.org would like to introduce to you SimCity DOs and DON Ts for realistic looking cities. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Everyone today. I m making this video to try to encourage sim city players to to focus on the design and layouts of their city. So they have a more feel. This is going to be a pretty big deal with the new sim city coming out in just a couple days.
Because you only are going to have about this much space to build your city. And you won t be able to build a region like you can in simcity. 4. On and then they ll be like another city over here.
And then another over here or something and make some great work or whatever um. But i definitely see a lot of problems coming out of it. And i see a lot of people getting. Frustrated you know with the new game in the restrictions.
Um. But right now. I ve been watching youtube a bit. And i see a lot of people um.
Knowing you know number 4. And simcity. 5. Making these cities and you know they ll have like avenues everywhere.
And you know highways everywhere a different size blocks. You know no consistency and you know they ll have huge populations. Which is cool. But other than that you know it s generally um kind of a mess of the city.
And also people will spend a lot of time and at the end they just kind of end up with a big period of the city in my opinion. Anyway so i have a list of do s and don ts. I ll try the hammer on food as quick as possible do number one to do number. One assess your land first.
This is sookie um. I think a lot of people to start building you know and you know without any direction or any central vision for what they want their city to the city to look like and i think. This is a big mistake because you know whatever you build if you build out your entire city your entire square in like 20 minutes. No now you re stuck with that no it s a lot harder to demolish stuff and start anew than it is to just do it right the first time.
And so um you really want to see what you re working with the winds going. Where the water tables are going to be the game. I think there s other things like where to mine for metals and drill for oil and all that fun stuff..
But what i always do is decide where i want the core of my city to be i always want to have a central business district. So it s kind of like the traditional american style city. And then where my industry is going to be and then my residential areas finally and i ll get more into that into detail. But you know you want a vision.
You want to create a vision for how the city is gonna function on the whole. So you re not just responding to everything you know i think. It s better to play proactively than reactively. So that s number one number two um and almost everyone i see so far as it has not done this.
But if you want a natural looking city start with small roads first you know even the dirt road. I think i actually think that s kind of cool that they have a dirt road on you know just because there are going to be houses especially when you start off like almost everything is going to be a low density and so on you know why why spend all the money and spend all your money right away on expensive girls and stuff you know i think a lot of people. The first thing they ll do on the new version. They ll be like a highway and then there s like the on ramp.
Where you can get into your town. And they ll just stretch that out all the way like halfway and even that i think is a mistake. I think you know after you decide where you want things to be on try to start as small as possible he ll go into this smaller city first here to kind of show you them talking boat because i m showing you simcity. 4.
But a lot of this doesn t fly does apply to simcity. 5. Um. So you can see my small town.
Here it s got like seven almost 8000. People um. You know but it s mostly streets and you know i did this on purpose you know just because you don t need to have massive avenues. It looks sloppy it looks um messy.
I think. And it s unnecessary. That s you know that s less taxes that are going in and more that are going out um pull up my soul. Mayor here.
I definitely decided that this is where i wanted my downtown to be and i structured my streets accordingly um. This is the main road you can also get downtown from here in here and these are really my only two roads and like a little guy here. But you can see by my traffic layer aside from you know this stretch maybe this stretch. My traffic is still pretty good um.
You know so i only build roads. When they re needed you know i got considerable traffic going here and a lot of people using this one as well. But um..
I think it s a mistake to start building avenues right away so start with small roads. Even dirt roads. Whatever being honest can again can i see my do number one in in play here. I definitely want a bit the industry on the outside and then the residential area with the schools in the hospital.
So i ll cover this area. So i didn t just build you know willy nilly like all here. I need this i need that i definitely have plan because it s a city finding a installation of the plan. So that s number two number three is concentrate your development.
I always try to rush by this really quick so once you have your street layout and once you fill your square. You know that that probably won t take too long. But then what s really going to make a difference is concentrating your development. Where your skyscrapers going to be versus your your small apartments.
And this is kind of a scaled down example. But here i have all my medium density and some of my commercial next to the train stations here to optimize my my public transport use. I think. The streetcars are going to be really cool in simcity.
5. And so i m going to kind of try to do the same thing you know we have the stations by um by high density areas and then low density areas like you know here. Maybe i ll make a cool to the suburban area. Those probably won t be connected to the streetcar system as well maybe they would but that all depends anyway.
I know this is getting long winded here. So i ll try to speed it up don t number one don t number one is the same as do number two basically don t fill huge streets everywhere. I think i pretty much covered that i think again. The first mistake.
People make is they just stretch out an avenue super. Far and then they start building afterward and then they have this huge avenue and you know oftentimes. Nobody s even using it so um you know like look outside your house or your apartment. You know what what if there was a huge freeway that nobody was using right from your house.
It would be quite ridiculous you know what actually i don t have any freeways or anything in this one. But maybe if i were to play some city for again a little differently don t number two don t build out to the borders. I think it s gonna look super. Silly when people inevitably have their regions and they have a square here.
That s a perfect square built right up to the border surrounded by nothing and then another one here. You don t need to use every square inch of your land. Here..
It s gonna look kind of silly. If you do you know and don t develop our mountains and you know don t build like 50 bridges. If you get a river or something either because it s going to take away from the natural feeling of the city assuming. That s what you re going for.
But um. You know just try to try to be more smart with how you develop your own border. So it doesn t just look like a patch like on someone s jeans or something um. And yeah.
I think that ll make it a lot more enjoyable and a lot more realistic number three. I see a lot of people just kind of being really careless with their commercial zoning and so i kind of want to show you what i do number three. The don t is don t i just kind of wrote bad commercial zoning here so um. So again this was my plan for the city.
A little bit of industry. Humane industry here. Most of the traffic is going to come from here through the downtown and to the industry and they got a railway connecting the whole city to. But you know don t just have your big avenue and then build your commercial area like over here.
Something in the corner like it s for one you re going to have less traffic. There and so those businesses aren t going to be as profitable. But to it s just kind of silly anyway. I think it s gonna look like a mess if you do look very organized.
You know this city definitely looks more organized there s the higher density area by the arm by the bay here. And that was exactly what i was going for number four is more of a pet peeve than anything. I mean. There s no real functional reason for it.
But don t um build sloppy grids. I see a lot of guys with the city this size and they ll have like you know all sorts of different sizes for their grids and so if you decide to do grids go back to the zone layer. And you want your city to look. Natural and realistic um try to make them uniform.
You know all around the city. Even in the industry. I think if there s some room for exception. But otherwise um.
There s no reason that you can t do this. I think it looks really sloppy. When people have like one size over here and then different size over here..
They one small ones. You know about like a house completely surrounded by roads like it s totally ridiculous. There s no reason for that um. But again that s just a pet peeve to each their own.
I guess and the number five don t is don t pack your industry. You can see what i ve done here to use them in again as on my industry in chunks and when i have plant trees between them i don t know what the tree options are going to be in the new game. But on this reduces pollution and also helps up the land value and so by doing this i can have industry relatively close to my residential area and yet um. They re not getting bombarded with that air pollution and so um.
There s definitely ways around that and i honestly haven t played simcity for about four months um. But i m just kind of excited because of the new game that s coming out and so i just kind of wanted to give people some ideas and that s really it that s all i had to say um. It was a bit long winded. But if you have any questions for me um.
You know please feel free to leave. A comment in the comment box um. You know please i i know that the city is a bit. Sloppy like there s a vacant lot here.
I know when i stopped playing i made like a huge change to my transportation network to my trains and i did a lot of demolition and then after that i just got tired of playing it so i stopped um. So i know right here. There s a lot of examples of things that should be better. But i m just showing you um.
I m just trying to show you um the layout and how i do my layout. And so don t like say like all we didn t even zone. There or something like that like i know i didn t do that i know if i were to play some city. 4.
And get back into it those would be some things i change um. But yeah. That s really it um you see i didn t develop the mountain. It s not a big mountain.
It d be cool if it were bigger. But again. Any questions um feel free to ask otherwise um thanks for ” ..
