s that vikings fans. I hope youre staying safe staying healthy over the next next few weeks. We will be introducing a new content series breaking down the minnesota roster position by position to help us accomplish.
This ven. Analyst. Ben lieber.
Will provide his thoughts on the team for the upcoming season as you all know ben theres gonna be a lot of competition for starting spots this season. But one position. We dont have to worry about is the quarterback position kirk cousins.
Son. Isnt signing a three year extension. Thats one position that will not need much competition for that starting job.
A man its good to be on with you good good to finally do some segments with you this is gonna be a lot of fun yeah. Were gonna go position by position. Obviously lets lets start with the quarterbacks because we all know it its the most important position on the football field cousins who flakes up to the left wants to put that position is solidified.
Weve got kurt cousins. Hes going to be on the team and that starting quarterback for the next. Several years.
And it was a great thing to get him extended free up some money do some other things with it with the rest of the roster. But you know you look at this depth chart for the for the quarterbacks and obviously. Theres theres not going to be a ton of competition for number one.
We all understand that hes he did you know we like to say that players are a lot of players are penciled in meaning. That you know you can be erased any sort of day and it just kind of builds that competition. But with quarterback and kirk hes inked in as qb number one.
But theres certainly a lot of lots of competition behind him speaking of that competition you draft a guy like me stanley gothic gary kubek kubiak was high on you know in that seventh round does does that mean you know he adds some value to that backup is there you know is there a fire to win dling or you know a competition battle for that backup position no i really think that there is listen you know sean mannion.
Understands being being a number two guys joke about how its the best. Its the best position in football. The best job in football once you get through training camp.
Though you know once you become the backup quarterback then and then youre just getting paid a few hundred thousand dollars a year holding a clipboard its awesome especially when you got a durable quarterback like kirk. But the reality is this big time competition with that number two spot. Nate stanley when you look at his body of work.
Hes a bigger guy you maybe wouldnt think that this movement offensive system would fit. A guy like nate stanley. Whos a big body guy.
And maybe not the most elusive quarterback. But when you watch him on tape when he played at iowa. Hes not gonna blow you away with pacs and statistics down the field.
Hes not gonna wow. You with with winning big time games. But he is the typical game manager and and i think he understands the role that he plays in that system and thats basically what the vikings are gonna do as well theyre gonna run the football theyre gonna manage the quarterback position by not throwing the ball away being efficient you know taking their shot to get downfield and most importantly for nate.
Its his play action ability. I think thats the one thing that he does really really well hes good with his feet. Hes good with his hips.
He can fake. He can fake to the running back and snap right back and get the ball to down the field. So i think that theres true competition for qb.
Too you look at all the the storylines last year. Surrounding kurt cousins. Never won the big game.
You know his record and primetime moments.
The snap looks right applause your san francisco and new orleans saints. Now that he has won that big game he beat the saints last year in the playoffs. What else do you need to see from him to make that next step you know i want to see him a little bit more just kind of do this bring else hmm.
All right lets lets see it more lets see a more relaxed kirk in each and every game. Not not just some of the games. That quote unquote dont really matter i want to see him week in and week out.
And i know that hes very much sort of a machine like youre gonna get the same guy every week at least done on the outside youre gonna see the same type of approach. I want to see him just play a little bit more free and i think that he did that in those big games. Thats the thing.
I think he proved himself not just executing. The plays. But its in those big moments.
How did he look did he look poised did he look a little skittish at times. Not last year. Hes got it inside the five thats the throw that could very well be riggs.
All the conversation about whether or not kirk cousins can show up big in the big game. Having that that that poison that relaxed miss where hes got that inner confidence where hes gonna command the huddle and he knows that hes gonna make this play and the offense is gonna make this play and and it was good to see him go through that last year. And i think its gonna build a lot of confidence within the offense and with this offseason being so shortened and and all that its gonna take veteran presence like that leadership to really just make these guys mesh quickly once the season starts cousins of course credits.
A lot of his success to chemists advanced key of course. You know cabinets. The head coach for the cleveland browns.
Now so looking at this vikings offense. How much of this vikings offic success do you put on kirk cousins. This year of course.
You know he has to breathe and not put pressure on himself.
But as far as like that success well how much do you put on him. You know i you got to put a lot on him. I mean.
Thats just the nature of the business. Thats the nature of the game. And he understands that hes talked about it publicly about you know feeling the pressure.
When he signed a big contract when he first got here. Its its one of those things where as a player you definitely recognize it you have to you have to honor that and respect if thats the nature of the game. But then you have to do your best to push it aside and go out and play mistake free and and dont worry about you know making mistakes.
And dont worry about what the public says so all those distractions. I think hes gotten out of a system you know its i think that the nature of his position. Is he has to be the guy he has to keep that internal pressure on himself to keep challenging himself.
And yeah as much as i would say ah you know its a team game. And its its gonna be on dalvin. Too and the receivers got to step up and boy that offensive line.
Yeah. All that being said the buck stops with the quarterback. And he understands that these do you see kirk making that next step in his game of course last year.
Was you know statistically his best season as far as like you know completion percentage and just a efficiency. The you see him making that next step in his career this year. I do and thats the one thing that i think has been impressive is that there are a lot of people and look then the washington redskins.
Felt the same thing. Why do you think that they franchised him all those times. Because they thought that he had hit his ceiling.
They thought that all right we were getting everything that were gonna get out of this guy.
And do we want to invest our long term future in this guy when we think this is the the maximum amount of production that hes going to give us and he bet on himself the vikings bet on him. And what has he done. Hes elevated his play.
Hes gotten better and thats all you ever want to do as a player is how can i improve on the year before and hes done that and he continues to do that so i expect the same thing you know hes got familiarity with clint kubiak. The quarterback coach he obviously knows gary he knows this offense this offense is not going to change theyre obviously gonna have some new wrinkles. Theyve got a shiny new toy and justin jefferson.
You expect herb smith to step up as a tight end. There are a lot of weapons for him to feel poised. Relaxed and just find sometimes just the easy throws to get in rhythm.
I think. Hes gonna have a great year lastly. Giving a quick tease to our next position by position breakdown.
Kirk cousins. Basically said. In his in his press conference.
He was like hey i want to establish that relationship early of justin jefferson. You know that communication. But getting him up here to you know run some ral tomas to develop that chemistry with justin jefferson.
But with those other receivers. You know during this time of isolation. Its so valuable then i mean its every year you talk about quarterbacks receivers that that relationship that marriage they have to have timing they have to have chemistry they have to rep.
It they have to be out there not just half speed not 3 4. Speed in some sort of spark or some sort of high school football field running routes on air. They have to be in there with helmets on against the defense to get those reps and to build up that trust ben thank you i think its only right we address the wide receiver position next.
But not today so if i can spasming sure you stay tuned right here to vikas calm or updates and coverage on our position by position breakdown you .
