“This is kelly forman. Again public information officer with the kentucky department of criminal justice justice training today. I want to talk to you a little bit about constructing an press release here at do cjt. We basically send three different types of press releases.
The first type of those is a media advisory and that is very simple. I m going to include a sample of that so you can see what i m talking about. But it s the the very basic who what when where and why and it just lets people know hey we re having an event. These are the details.
Most of the time. We. Only send a media advisory for things like meetings. Things that we re not trying to encourage a lot of extra participation.

But that we do need to let people know something s going on if it s a public meeting or if it s just something that we re doing on campus. But maybe not incredibly newsworthy it depends. But that s typically what we use media advisories for the second kind of press release that we send here is what we refer to as a pre release and essentially. It is like a media advisory.
But just a little bit longer. It has some more details so you re still addressing the basic five w s letting people know what we re actually trying to get the information out about in advance. Especially if it is for an event that we do want people to come to so the major difference. Here is that in that length that we add to the media advisory style of press release.
We re going to talk more about the why why we are doing what we re doing why we think it s important and why they should come why they should care those are the kinds of things that we want to make sure that we include. But it still is a pretty simple and straightforward news release. There s not a lot of extra details. But just enough to get somebody interested in coming to our event.

So the third kind of release is what we consider a post release for example every year here at do cjt. We have a memorial ceremony and it is for the kentucky law enforcement memorial foundation. Every officer who has ever been killed in the line of duty in the state of kentucky is listed on a memorial that we have outside of our facility and unfortunately every year. If we have new officers who have been killed and their names need to be added.
We add those during a ceremony and we honor their survivors and it s something that we invite the media to every year. However we also want to invite more than just the media. So we will send out the poster. I m sorry we ll send out the pre release and try to garner as much attention as we can to that for maybe.
Local community officers or anyone who might have an interest in participating in the ceremony. Or just honoring those fallen officers. Now in the post release. This is something that we do in an effort to try to get more attention for the the ceremony and for the officers that have been lost if there are reporters that weren t able to make it for example.

You know kentucky is a pretty big state from one end to the next. And we re located located in the central part of the state for news organizations that might be in the far western part of the state. It might take them five hours to get to us to participate in the ceremony. So a lot of times you know news organizations.
Don t have that much travel time in a single day and so they won t send a news crew. But if we send them a post release. They will be happy to run that so a post release is essentially coverage of the event and i prefer i lean more toward the feature a style of post release press releases just because i like them to be i like to tell a good story. And i have learned over the years that if i send a post release about something that is written in a style that can easily be republished.
Many organizations will go ahead and run my release and just put either a special to whatever. The newspaper is or that type of title on it and especially if i include photos that s something that i would definitely recommend if you re sending in a post event release and you have photos of the event news organizations. Typically newspapers and online sources are going to be more apt to include your content. If you have a well written release that reads like a typical story and includes photos as well so those are my tips.

If you are writing a post event release try to make sure you know who your audience is if you know that if you send out your release. And there are organizations that will pick it up and run it if it s written in a way that they can easily reproduce make sure that you tailor your news release that way. If you know that the the primary audience for your releases are tv stations. There s a distinct possibility that they re not gonna have any opportunity to run your release.
They need to have that visual footage. So unless you can send them some kind of feed or b. Roll. Or something.
That s probably not going to be as effective for them so make sure that you know what your audience is and who you re trying to get the information to i hope these tips helped have a great ” ..
