Today, newyorkcityvoices.org would like to introduce to you Tutorial: Mixing and Editing Multi-track OGG (.mogg) files with Audacity v1.3.14. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“This is rob this is my first software video tutorial and apologize if i sound sound a little burned out. But i ve been trying to figure out the right combination to get a good good. Capture. Going here.
With good stereo audio and have the microphone mixed in all good. Anyway. Okay. Looks like i got a nail down.
Finally here anyway. This tutorial is about doing multitrack mixes and edits from the audio files known as multitrack aughh or mog files. These files have come about from the rock band series of video games. Which you know i am a big fan of but you know being able to get these individual tracks separated.
You know from the original recordings of bands. That you know we all know and love is just you know it s an awesome awesome gift to musicians and music lovers and and this is a tutorial about some cool stuff you can do with these files. So i m using this program called audacity and this is their latest version one beta. I think in the ass level version two they re working on.
This is the version that i got going here and then i m going to be showing you so if you manage to get some mog files. And i ll leave that as an exercise to listener to figure out how you do that you can open them in audacity. It doesn t associate them as a double file. So you have to actually run the program then choose to open and then you know you find the file you want to open and i ll just pick one here.
The file has all the individual tracks or or i d say a collection of tracks. These are not you know the original multitrack masters. Because that would be like 32 tracks or 64. Tracks.
Or some huge numbers typically these have like you know eight to ten tracks in them. And if you just pull it up in audacity and you play it it s not going to sound. Very good you know i ll give you a little sample okay and there s multiple reasons for that the biggest. One is that the stereo tracks are all being being played back in mono so every you know track that was supposed to be you know totally in the left channel or totally in the right channel is actually being played equally in both channels.
So you kind of end up with a distorted mess. So one of the first things to do is to figure out. Which of these tracks belong together. And it s it s not always the same pattern.
You know a lot of times..
You know you have the drums at the top. But you know it depends on the file. So play the file back and you like solo. A particular track you can hear just to drum tracks here.
And what do you want to do is you want to put these tracks together. So you use this drop down menu and you move the track up so they re adjacent and then you select the top track of these two and you gone insane make stereo track. So that took those two separate drum tracks. That were both being played back in mono and has made them into a single stereo track where it s split left and right.
And you ll need to do the same for everything that s in stereo. And you know sometimes the vocals are in stereo. Sometimes they re mono. Sometimes you know there s one bass track and that would be mono and sometimes.
There s two bass tracks and then or more so we ve got to figure out what the tracks are here and we ll just solo again and then if you re not familiar with audacity you can move around before easter two big tracks and what we want to do is move this track up. There might be a quicker way to do this. But i want to get it up here next to the other base track and then we want to make them stereo probably two different performances. But you know it s it s they re there they re not meant to be played equally in both channels.
You know it s designed to be split left and right you can really tell that when you get everything separated all right okay so we ll go ahead and and i know..
This is a vocal track as well and then you know it could be one performance recorded in stereo or it could be two different vocal performances overdubbed. So we ll go ahead and make that a stereo track and then this last. One is also speaker. So again make it a stereo track so now everything s stereo.
We ve got basically four stereo tracks for drums bass vocals and guitar and when you listen back to it it sounds much more like what you would expect the original recording. Now the levels are all set if their defaults here so a lot of times. You know you ll play it back and you ll notice that you know the vocals. Are really loud or some other instrument is a lot louder than you would expect or or maybe.
It s even distorting. So you know you can you can play it back. Now. These recordings aren t the original quality.
They re they re over compressed you can hear there s a lot of leakage in there so they weren t you know they re separated. I think by the game studios and not but you know in the original. But you get the idea. This is a great tool for musicians that want to listen to an individual instrument track or tracks.
And you know learn exactly what was being played on the original performance or you can make your own recording..
You know. Which has all the instruments except for maybe. The one that you want to play to or you know make a video with or you know do some karaoke. You know whatever so you know once you ve you ve done that you ve decided you know your how your mix is going to be if you just say that you ll you re not gonna get a file that you can play back you know with another program or put on a cd or whatever so you want to export this file.
Once you ve got it you know your mix going then this is how you would export. It and you can choose your file format you can do you know wav or mp3 or wma. We know whatever year your favorite format of choice. We want to put it on a cd you probably want to do a wave 16.
Bit wav file. Anyway i had a lot of fun with this and i expect to do some more drumming videos on youtube and you know maybe some homemade karaoke stuff. But this audacity tool is a really great program for free and these mug files or you know a wonderful thing and good luck and have fun. ” .
