Today, newyorkcityvoices.org would like to introduce to you Upgrading the GPU in my laptop! – Dell Precision m6700 GTX 980m Upgrade. Following along are instructions in the video below:
” s up guys welcome back to another video today. I m gonna be upgrading the the aging gtx 680 m. And my dell precision m. 60.
700 laptop to this newer and more powerful gtx 980m so without further ado. Let s get to it this is by no means intended to be a how to video. But i will run you through the basics of the process to start we of course have to disassemble the computer. I ll start by removing the battery.
Removing the bottom panel carefully prying off this plastic bezel around the keyboard here removing the keyboard screws removing the keyboard itself then remove the optical drive and a whole bunch of other teeny tiny screws that hold the whole chassis together and those are all philips head thank you dell then remove the palm rest and trackpad assembly. Then the display and display power..
Connector and then the two fans and finally the two heat sinks unfortunately you have to remove the cpu heatsink to get to the gpu heatsink. So we ll have to replace the cpu while we re in here after all that s done we can carefully remove the stock four gigabyte quad roque 5000 m. Which i have modified to for all intents and purposes be a gtx 680. M physically these are both mx m 30.
Type b cards. But the 980 m has around 1500 cuda cores versus the 680 m. Is roughly 1300 not only that that the ninety dm is based on a newer maxwell architecture. Meaning each of its cuda cores is about one and a half times more powerful than the cuda cores in the 680 m.
It also has eight gigabytes of video ram versus four on the 680 m. So we should see a pretty big leap in terms of performance..
Something s a note is that the 980 m. Has one extra r22 chip on the pcb right above the memory modules here. This will need to be cooled. So i took a bit of extra thermal pad.
I had from the heat spreader that came with my 980 m. And moved it to the dell heatsink. These pads come in different thicknesses. But thankfully.
It was the same so this should work perfectly you ll also have to swap the x brackets on the back of the cards. Because the 90 dms is a tad bit too tall to fit in the m 6700 for thermal paste..
I used my trusty tube of arctic mx4 and i ve had for over four years now and surprisingly it hasn t gone bad. Yet once that s done we can begin reassembly. I won t bore you with that though it s the same thing you just saw. But in reverse in order to get this card working in windows.
You ll have to mod the ini file of your drivers. But there are many guides online that can walk you through that there s actually pretty simple so i won t cover that here. So how does it perform very. Well actually control.
Sees huge gains making 1080p finally playable fire watch now runs close to the 90 hertz refresh rate of my monitor and shadow of the tomb raider s framerate has more than doubled at the same graphics settings this performance jump means i can keep using this laptop for years to come before i even start looking in an upgrade and despite mobile. Gpus being more expensive in their desktop counterparts..
An atm was only around a hundred and ninety dollars and while that s not cheap. I do think the performance makes it worth it as always thank you guys so much for watching. If you liked the video hit like get subscribed and ring. The bell.
So you don t miss out on any of my future videos and i will see you guys in the next one ” ..
