Today, newyorkcityvoices.org would like to introduce to you WHAT NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT BEING A PROBATION OFFICER |Your Favorite P.O.. Following along are instructions in the video below:
I was gonna film another video about what the pos do from day to day day and here. It is so todays video. Were gonna talk about the lets talk about the field visits and were also going to talk about court visits.
Lets start with the office visits. Because thats the majority of what your day is gonna be youre gonna be in the office front well for me im in the office from 8 to 5 monday through friday weekends. Know on called no i watched some youtube videos and people were saying that they they have nights.
Where theyre on call no their job their job is a little bit too stressful sometimes to be on call like no after 5 oclock. Im out thats it its a wrap. But anyways on office days.
You i usually see about 10 to 12 clients or defendants or whatever you want to call them probationers. I see about 10 to 12 of them wait. Theres a man we have about a 10 or 15 minute visit.
They have a format they have to fill out every month. Let us know if theres any updates. Any changes and new phone numbers and new addresses have you got any contact with law enforcement.
Have you had any drugs or alcohol. Lately of course. Everybody says no like doug one somebody was saying yeah did smoke.
We last night. Im sorry and i use more help. But thats like i said it rare.
Its few and far between so if somebody has used drugs or drink alcohol and they want to talk to me about it hey lets get to it we can have them fill out a form. Its gonna be an admission form this form will we use in court. If i ever have to take them back to court.
Not every violation is followed by this person born in jail. A lot of people think that. But its really not true waiting people so many chances is unreal like you will be blown away by the number of chances.
These people actually kid like everybody. I was complaining about the appeal sentence you know my pillow.
She just got it out for being better than thats the salon this tester laughs. You might get a pio thats like rubber real straight. And thats not gonna you know give you any leeway.
But for the most part. We would work with people peels are there to work with you everybody is there to see you do better. But of course.
They dont think that but whatever and after the office visit. If we do require them to take a drug test. So we send them out for testing now let me tell you this we used to do drug tests in house.
So in our office. We used to watch the defendant pee had to pull her pants down pull the underwear down turn around do the hokey pokey everything and then show everything and people really hated that and its like your pos. Seeing you and your stuffs every month.
But of course. The men went to the mill pios to get the drug tests. And the female is what sort of female poc those artists.
But eugene so they go out there outsource to a different company and they take their drug tests. There so if we need them to do that well send them to do that but mostly day to day thats what youre doing your office is in there 10 15 minutes. There are some occasions.
What we do have to do interviews with them its a special interview that we do with every client. So those interviews can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour just depending on how talkative your client want to be that day. But most of the defendants.
They dont want to talk to their pio. So trust me. That that interview will be real short real sweet and then we answer everything in the computer.
So if you dont know how to type youre gonna learn how to type with this job. Because you have to enter a lot of stuff in the computer. And i think after you get used to your client.
The visits become shorter and shorter. So its all about building a rapport with the person.
Its all about getting them to be more comfortable in your office. Because of course. They dont want to be there like lets be real.
If youre on probation would you just want to go check in with this person every month. And a lot of my the fitness are a lot older than me like its kind of weird because those older people they dont really want to listen to somebody thats younger than now like but just come on lets be real and even the men. The men sometimes.
Its like oh this little girl was about to tell me like okay. Paul listen. Were gonna do this together.
We dont get the ristic. Yeah. Okay.
You hear im him is making work like stop playing um. But most of the time. I have much dammit people are respectful of course.
Theyre gonna come into your office and lie lie lie and lie some more nobodys gonna tell you the truth so just be prepared that everybodys gonna come to your office and give you this whole story about their innocent. Some people might be innocent. But most of the people who tell me theyre innocent.
I read the office report and its something totally different. Yeah. Nobody wants to like be perceived as the bad person obviously so i get it i understand.
But just be prepared if you want to be in this job. Most people going to come to your office. And theyre gonna try to sell you some bs dont think youre personally this is not about you okay they just theyre just trying to do the best they can people who are violating their probation.
Those probation business will take a little bit longer because you got to address. These violation. You got to make sure you tell this person okay.
This is a plan. This is what were going to do to help you you know not violate any more and to get you to complete your probation successfully and then theres court days court.
They let me tell you when i first started this job four years ago. Cordays were so so intimidating to me youre in there its like so many people you might have a chain gang over here. If you dont know the chain gang here put a picture on here is the chain gang.
I mean its kind of intimidating if youve never been in that setting before but most often the judges are really really really nice theyre really helpful theyre you know theyre there to of course admonish. The defendant for not doing what theyre supposed to do so the court days kind of go by fast if its some interesting cases otherwise it kind of drag out and then theres those days. Where you have to testify which ive talked about in my last video which ill link up here in the cards um revocation hearings when you have to go and testify that that can be very very very intimidating especially if youve never testified a court of law before you have you the client.
There the judge over here the district attorney over here. There boy over there like and everybodys asked me questions like trying to figure out you do your job right did you give this pressure the resources. They needed did you give them the help they need it like if they helped me.
But the court nobody wants to hear what this client did at this moment when youre testified. They want to hear what you did to help this client. What you did to get them to come to the office.
So make sure you know your ps and qs you follow up with sanctions you follow up with whenever they violate make sure you follow follow that up with some type of response like you cant just allow them to violate you not do anything about it. Like you have to do something. It has to be documented.
Document cover yourself okay. The other part of the day will be the field visits. Okay.
When youre out in the field. You go with a partner in my area at least some not sure how these in other areas. When i do live in texas.
Like i mentioned many times before we go out in the field with a partner. We have radios law enforcement. Everybody knows where we are were out no they know what addresses were going to so that can mean we can maintain a level of security because it can be dangerous youre going into these peoples homes.
You dont know what they have in there you dont know whos in there. But so thats a level of security for us. If law enforcement knows where were going when were leaving that address.
Were we going to be back at the office. Because we dont have weapons like i mentioned in my area.
We do not carry weapons thats another reason why its so important to respect you know fitness build that rapport with them get to know them get them to be able to have a level of trust with you as much as they possibly can cuz obviously youre gonna pio like how much trust are you really gonna get. But just try to be respectful be kind listen being they take this is your job. If youre signing up for this youre signing up to help people at the end of the day.
They dont want to be there. But they have to be there so just try to make it the best experience that you can for them. And everybody makes a difference in their lives like honestly in my last video.
I didnt mention how what was it my favorite part of being a peel. But i didnt forget to mention that when you actually see somebody change and they come back to you month later or lets say 12 months into their probation. And they have five months five years to go.
And you can see the difference you can see they have a job now you can see theyre not using drugs anymore you can see they coming in with a smile. I mean. It is that part makes the job worth.
Wow. Thats why youre doing youre not doing it for the money because let me tell you youre not gonna get paid that much so. If you think you oh let me go do this so.
Im gonna make the big bucks. Okay. No no no but you came in comfortable living for your family of course.
Youre not gonna be out here running around the range rovers and bentleys but you can make a comfortable living for yourself. And its legal but being in the field. I got off topic do you know ben can be dangerous blaze also fun youre out all day going to clients houses check in to make sure.
That is where they are to live believe it or not some people were putting actress on the file or on their paperwork. And they dont actually live there so thats the main purpose of the field visits to make sure that this person is living where they say theyre living. So that will give us just something you have often visits you have home business or field business.
And you have court visits. So if you have questions about anything that i mentioned in this video and something i forgot or something you just want me to elaborate on please leave me a comment. I am reading everybodys comments again please be respectful in the comment section.
