Everyone its caleb coles here im an australian singer songwriter today. Imm going to be talking to you about the differences between falsetto head voice and and a secret that really great singers use in regards to these three ranges that is coming up in this video music now. Theres a lot of confusion.
As to the differences of these ranges. Because unfortunately a lot of people use different definitions. So some people use head voice and falsetto interchangeably.
Some people use the word head resonance. Instead of head voice. What do all these things refer to because.
If you talk about head resonance. Well. Even your chest.
Voice resonates in your head at what point. Does it become a different register. These things can become very confusing for new singers so really quickly lets get some definitions on the board firstly falsetto is best defined as the high range of a male or female singer that is disconnected.
Its might be breathy might sound a bit froggy in the throat. Its the high range that you crack into so if youre yodeling youre. Thats falsetto if youre singing like that is falsetto females can also use falsetto the real difference between falsetto and say head voice.
Really just comes down to the amount of chord closure. So often the difference is just how well the singer is trained now thats not to say that a well trained singer cant use falsetto. But they use falsetto intentionally they intentionally crack their voice to give it a certain tone.
They intentionally use extra breath in that way where head voice is where you get better chord closure. Your ct muscles are more engaged. But in a sense it feels very similar to falsetto in the throat in other words.
You could look at head voice and falsetto as a very similar range category. And the real difference is the amount of control and chord closure. An amateur singer usually cant use their head voice properly so you would categorize it as falsetto and an advanced singer can go between the two better chord closure.
Like in head voice. A better connection to your chest voice. Which occurs in head voice.
Where falsetto more disconnected more breathy more hoodie maybe the best way to look at falsetto and head voice is its like two concentric or overlapping circles. There is an in between zone. Where theres not much distinction between the two but then theres also the two fringes where there is a huge difference between a very disconnected breathy falsetto and a very well adducted head voice that can connect very clearly with the rest of your range finally.
There is something called reinforced falsetto. Which is essentially where you raise your larynx and put extra breath through in order to get some power in your falsetto. This is sometimes confused for a mixed voice.
Because they both have a lot of ring and high pitched resonance to it. But again. The main difference is is that in a reinforced falsetto youre stuck in that disconnected range.
You cant just slide down to the rest of your range or slide up you are caught in this space in your voice. An example of reinforced falsetto would be in say the beegee staying alive or i believe in a thing called love from the darkness. So for example when it goes.
I believe in a thing called love just says to the rhythm of my heart. I believe in a big goal. That is reinforced falsetto on the high notes.
There was quite a bit of power. But it didnt come through proper vocal cord adduction. Although there was a little bit of that it was more through extra breath a higher larynx and as i slid back down.
You could hear that my voice stuck in a falsetto. It didnt reconnect to the rest of my range. It wasnt a mixed voice.
It wasnt even really a head voice. It was a reinforced falsetto so finally i want to talk about flagella. Now flagellate is the high extension on your head voice range.
Now the reason. I say its not a high extension of the falsetto range is because in flagellae you have great vocal cord. Closure.

Which means you dont have a lot of extra breath. Escaping falsetto or a disconnected untrained head voice falsetto cant connect to the flagella register. Very well because theres too much air getting through so.
What you need to do to access flagellae is to train your cord closure through head voice. And then get a high pitch extension on that so an example of flagella is this now. I just pick some random notes.
But i was trying to show you that on the onsets. Its very crystal. Its very sharp its got an attack to it its not huh.
Its not like falsetto that has that extra breath and you cant use the falsetto range again to connect to your flagellae. So to get flagellate you need to train your head voice. You need to get rid of the breath.
You need to control the adduction of your vocal cords. You need to hold back the air and so singers like dimash use flagellate all the time with those high notes right. Its actually quite easy to control that range.
I again i was just picking random notes. But i can go quite high and you can go all over the place. But you have to hold back on the air.
You cant blast it through like in falsetto. Now finally i wanted to talk about what great singers do in regards to these three registers. And that is simply blend.
Once youve trained your vocal cords to be able to come together or to go apart like in falsetto. Where theres extra breath in reinforced falsetto. Where your vocal chords arent quite coming together.
But theyre reinforced or whether its head voice. Where theyre together or flagella where theyre really tight and together. If you learn how to manipulate your vocal cords.
You can actually go to any tone. You want that is the secret is that you want to be able to use a breathy tone. A non breathy tone.
A powerful tone or light tone. Whatever and just switch it on and off. And so a great singer these definitions start to become almost meaningless in some way um.
Theyre not completely meaningless because its still describing whats happening. But its just something that comes naturally with training you can just naturally sound. A certain way you dont even sometimes.
I dont know am. I in falsetto. Am.
I in head voice. Am i in flagler. Am.
I even in mixed voice or full voice or it gets confusing the more and more trained you are because youre no longer thinking in terms of registers youre just thinking in terms of notes tones vocal cord deduction. But it doesnt start there it starts with a disconnected high voice starts with falsetto. Then it starts with head voice once you bring it together then you can work on your chest your mix your reinforcement set of your flagellaes.
Until youre able to purely use these registers just to make the noise. The sound. The singing that you want and thats all it comes down to all these ranges.
Its not about having the biggest range. The highest range the strongest voice or whatever. Its about sending emotion through that microphone.
Its about sending feelings. Its about communication through a song and your voice is the instrument to do that and so train your voice master your falsetto master your reinforced falsetto master. Your head voice master your flagella your mix go for it and so that you can send the message you want through your music.
