“It s been a little while since i did a straightforward tech product review and and today. We are reviewing the apeman c420 dashcam. I ve spared all expense and to get myself a dashcam. I paid 25 pounds for this on amazon.
But the reviews were pretty good for it now assuming they re all earnest and straightforward reviews. I m hoping this is going to be just a bit of a diamond in the rough anyway. Let s open the box. And see what eventually got for our money in here.
Sir. We ve got a thank you card from amazon dear. Mr. Miss.
There s a thank you card from the manufacturer. There s a user manual in several languages and then we ve got the camera itself which we ll have a look at any moment. And an accessory talks. So in here.
I ve got a short usb cable suction mount don t know what that is might be an opening tool or something for opening the case a long usb cable with a an in car 12 volt adapter that s good it s got a usb pass through as well. That s handy good okay and a tiny bag containing that s like a sim ejection tool..
But i presume that s useful for something so. Let s have a look at the camera itself so there s the camera fairly simple design. It s got what a 2 inch screen. Something like that it looks quite similar to some of those cheap budget action cams.
I ve seen so yeah ok so next thing to do is i m gonna read the manual and then we are going to give this a little try out ok. I guess while we re here. We should have a look around the thing so on the front. We ve got obviously the lens and then there s a little speaker there on this site.
We ve got four buttons and they are up and down menu. And okay and power on the top there s the mounting slot and a micro usb on this side. There s a microphone hole and a reset hole. Don t get those two mixed up sd card slot.
And then there s a jack plug there for a rear camera on the bottom. There s a little grill. There which you might think would be a speaker. But it doesn t seem to be because that s the speaker.
There so i presume that s maybe a cooling vent or something like that and then on the back just obviously the screen and a little indicator led and the logo. So we re gonna go and install this in the car..
And i think i ll probably leave the settings completely on defaults for now and we ll see what we get from that if there s anything in this video that i don t explain or that you ve got questions about then do feel free to ask in the comments. If i can i ll answer in the comments. If the question turns out to be quite a big one i might make a follow up video okay so i ve mounted this in my car. I gonna say i didn t make a masterful job of stuffing.
The cables down the side there. But i ve done my best. That s it in fact. What this tool is for of course is for stuffing cables behind this a trim and it worked pretty well.
It s nice and robust anyway. So i ve mounted the camera over that side actually to the left of my rear view mirror. Because in my toyota aygo there s not a heck of a lot of windscreen. I don t really want to fill this up with more obstructions.
I don t need to see the screen. All the time so i ve put the dashcam over there it s gonna see through a portion of the windscreen. Which is covered by the wipers anyway so hopefully that ll be okay. So let s fire it up and see what happens so when i just turn the ignition on there s a short delay and then the camera powers up.
And it begins recording immediately right let s take you for a spin. And see what we get of course..
I m in the uk. So we drive on the left side of the road here in case that causes anybody any confusion. It s just normal for britain. So i ve been using this dashcam for about a week.
Now and i m just gonna show you some of the footage that we got from it all in all it did pretty well in a variety of different lighting conditions. The footage that it captures is genuine 1080p obviously for this price it s not going to shoot movie quality footage out of your windscreen. I did have problems when i was driving into direct sunlight. That s more of an artifact of my car and windscreen than it is of the camera itself my early model.
Toyota aygo has a bit of a design flaw in that direct sunlight shines off the dashboard and reflects off the windscreen. This is a problem for the driver as well as the dashcam. So this is quite quite a design flaw in my car. So we have to make allowance for that and on a more typical british summer day it actually performed really well the only real problem.
I would say i had with this camera was that the the bracket that mounts. It has got a little bit of flex in it and could do with being a bit more rigid and as a result even when this is tightened up as much as far as it can go. The camera will tend to vibrate a little bit when you go over bumps. You can see that in the footage.
I m showing you now. But i think that can probably be fairly easily solved by just interposing a little foam washer so i have a quick look through the menus..
There s really nothing very exciting in there. But there are a variety of options for turning off timestamps setting date. And time setting the modes and various different other features fairly basic there are really only two menus. But it does what it needs to so in summary was this worth it i would say yes actually 25 pounds for a basic dashcam.
It s not going to show me every single tiny little detail in the scene. However what i bought this for was chiefly to be at establish my right or wrong. In the case of an accident. So if i go through a green light and a car comes into the side of me this camera will show what really happened.
And that was really the objective of getting this was not to capture massively high quality footage. But just to get some evidence that i could use in the case of a dispute. So i would say not bad value for the money certainly. I will at some point maybe just go up to twice this price and see what we can get for our at that level.
